Former MSU goalie stars on and off ice

The State News caught up with former MSU and current NHL goaltender Ryan Miller on Wednesday. The East Lansing native has starred between the pipes for the Buffalo Sabers for the past four seasons. While at MSU, Miller set the NCAA record for career shutouts and was the recipient of the Hobey Baker Award, given to the nations best collegiate hockey player, in 2001. Off the ice, Miller also is starring in a new commercial for PepsiCo Inc.‘s Amp energy drink.

Coach Mark Dantonio is excited. The return of quarterback Keith Nichol has finally given the MSU head football coach what he wanted — three quarterbacks competing for a starting spot when starter Brian Hoyer graduates.

Quarterbacks shuffle for MSU football

The quarterback shuffle has officially reached full-throttle in East Lansing. A day after Keith Nichol announced his intentions to sign with MSU, sophomore Nick Foles has decided to leave the school and seek playing opportunities closer to his home in Austin, Texas.

QB Dixon opts to transfer

Quarterback Connor Dixon has decided to leave MSU and continue his football career at another university. MSU released the sophomore from his scholarship, making him eligible to play at another school. “I thought it was the right move to make,” Dixon said.

Seniors excel, but Spartans drop season finale

Despite being mathematically eliminated from postseason play, the seniors on the MSU baseball team left Kobs Field with class in their last collegiate game on Saturday. The seniors had big days, but it wasn’t enough to spur a victory, as MSU fell to Indiana 14-5 on Senior Day. Evan Friedland led the charge for the seniors with a three-run home run in his last collegiate at bat, while fellow seniors Dennis Jones and Justin Potes each added two hits.

MSU struggles in big game, loses 9-2

MSU starting pitcher Mike Monterey allowed six runs in six innings Thursday, as the Spartan baseball team dropped an important game to Indiana, 9-2, at Kobs Field. Every MSU starter had one hit, but junior Kyle Day produced his team’s only runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The home run cut Indiana’s lead to 3-2, but the Hoosiers responded with five runs in the seventh to build a commanding 8-2 lead.

New MSU hockey assistant rewarded for 'job well done'

From the frosty banks of Alaska to the humid wetlands of Florida, Brian Renfrew has followed his love for hockey across the United States. Now, it looks like the well-traveled hockey coach finally has a home. After five years as an assistant coach for the MSU hockey team, head coach Rick Comley announced Friday the promotion of Renfrew to associate head coach. “Look at my track and how quickly it’s gotten here, it doesn’t happen like this for a lot of guys,” Renfrew said.

MSU struggles to find big hits in demanding CMU victory

Mount Pleasant — The MSU baseball team slugged 14 hits and forced seven pitching changes Tuesday night – usually indicators of a blowout victory. This time, it was anything but. Central Michigan had 15 hits and forced nine pitching changes, as they outlasted MSU, 14-6, in an offensive battle at Theunissen Stadium.

MSU takes 2 of 3 from Purdue

It’s crunch time for the MSU baseball team. With the season winding down and the Big Ten Tournament approaching, the Spartans desperately need wins. They found two of them during a four-game series at Purdue (27-22 overall, 18-9 Big Ten) last weekend, while only letting one game slip.
