Spartans take home first place

The No. 23 MSU men’s golf team won its second tournament of the season Wednesday after the final round of the Adams Cup of Newport at the Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I.This was the first outright tournament victory for the men, who tied with Xavier in the Wolverine Invitational, in Ann Arbor last weekend.The Spartans came out of the Orchard Course with a final team score of 873 after the last round Wednesday, three strokes ahead of Texas A&M.

The media got its first look at the 2002-03 MSU men’s basketball team Tuesday afternoon and the Spartans have high expectations for the upcoming season.The Spartans, which are coming off a 19-11 season and a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, are looking to bring their game back to a higher level.“We took a look at last year and the last three years to see where we need to go and how we’re going to get back to elite status,” Spartan basketball head coach Tom Izzo.“Looking back at last year, we didn’t have any expectations, we just wanted to survive.

Women‘s soccer bounced back from its loss to Penn State to earn a convincing 4-0 decision over Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne Tuesday at Old College Field. The two teams traded scoring opportunities and played an evenly matched game the first 15 minutes. Momentum soon swung the Spartans’ way as junior forward Tiffany Laskowski had the game’s first score, putting one past IPFW goalkeeper Rachel Poor at 17:17. From that point on MSU owned the match, outshooting the Mastadons 18-2 the first half and 27-7 for the game. “It was one of those games where it was easy for our team to overlook them.” Spartan head coach Tom Saxton said.

Spartans to take on Oakland as team regroups from Big Ten loss

After experiencing a setback Sunday against Ohio State, the men’s soccer team welcomes a break from its rigorous Big Ten schedule when it takes on Oakland today in Rochester.The Spartans (7-3 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) have struggled against intraconference opponents this season, gaining their only conference victory in a 1-0 win over Northwestern.“I think we need to get back on a good note,” MSU head coach Joe Baum said.

Womens tennis team topples Wolverines

MSU proved to be victorious against Michigan this weekend, as women’s tennis sophomore Dora Vastag defeated Wolverine Chrissie Nolan (6-3, 6-1) to capture the singles title Sunday at the Wolverine Fall Tennis Classic in Ann Arbor. Vastag also paired up with junior Caroline Lay to win the Victors doubles flight title, defeating Michigan’s Jennifer Duprez and Kim Plaushines 8-6.
