BASEBALL

MSU baseball's Kelley, Hughes earn conference, national honors

After a 4-0 week for MSU baseball, two Spartans received honors for their contributions throughout the week. Junior outfielder Brandon Hughes collected two national honors after a breakout performance against Illinois on Sunday, belting three home runs. Freshman outfielder and left-hander Bryce Kelley also received his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor.

MSU commit Xavier Tillman part of team effort downing Romulus, 74-52, advancing to state finals

Grand Rapids Christian high school senior forward and MSU-commit Xavier Tillman only scored 5 points on Friday, but he doesn't care. His team blew out the Romulus high school Eagles Friday afternoon 74-52 in the MSHAA Class A championship semifinals at the Breslin Center. Grand Rapids Christian, also nicknamed the Eagles, will play Clarkston Saturday for the state championship title.

MSU commit Foster Loyer helps Clarkston breeze past West Bloomfield, 78-35 to advance to state title game

The sight of green and white and maize and blue jerseys square off at the Breslin Center is a familiar sight for most spectators, but the teams on the floor weren't. Clarkston's senior point guard and MSU verbal-commit Foster Loyer scored a game-high 32 points to help lead Clarkston high school (25-1 overall) on Friday past the West Bloomfield Lakers (17-8 overall) 78-35 in the MSHAA Class A state championship semifinals.

MSU student-athletes named Academic All-Big Ten honorees

62 MSU student-athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the 2017 winter sports season, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. To be eligible for this honor, each student-athlete must earn a varsity letter, be in at least their second academic year at a Big Ten university and obtain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. MSU swimming and diving sophomores Gabe Whitaker, Courtney Aycock and Heidi Surdyk were three of 12 conference student-athletes who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA.
