To be completely honest, I write these columns because I like seeing my name in print. I like having a lot of people read what I write, and I like the possibility of making someone else think about what occupies my thoughts.
Although it was refreshing to see The State News highlight the attractions of Michigan’s largest city, (“Rock City provides a trip into the past,” SN 9/22) Jennifer Meese’s writing displayed a disposition to the city that was ill-informed and amateurish at best. Aside from factual errors - the oxymoron of the Detroit People Mover as an “above-ground subway,” or the claim that the Renaissance Center has four, rather than seven, towers - the piece contained an unfortunate and unnecessary slur on the city’s reputation.
It’s truly a shame that the Culturas de las Razas Unidas’ mural on the rock was painted over, (“Fraternity paints over heritage message on rock,” SN 9/25) a true shame that the members of the CRU didn’t have the pride in what they were painting to stay til dawn and defend it. As long as I’ve been going to MSU, the only way to have your message stay on the rock was to defend it til dawn.
I could not have been happier to see Amanda Clapp’s column (“Girlie magazines destroy teenage girls’ self-esteem,” SN 9/25). Too many girls these days fall victim to the traps set by the media.

Painters must use common courtesy when covering the rock on Farm Lane with colors. Late Thursday night, members of Culturas de las Razas Unidas painted a message to promote Hispanic Heritage Month on the rock.

I was considering writing a letter about driving on campus. When I saw the front page of Thursday’s edition of The State News (“Student concerned with ‘U’ traffic, SN 9/21), it made what I had to say much more important. I drive on campus, as well as drive with my friends on campus.
MSU students should not worry about being in the minority if they think their courses are too easy. Recently, more than a few have expressed their opinions toward the university required classes - deeming them to be too easy and quite unnecessary.

I found Dave Wirth’s letter an embarrassment to himself (“ Runners shouldn’t sweat cat-calling,” SN 9/18). I am surprised that anyone would sit down and carefully type out the display of ignorance that was Wirth’s letter.

MSU President M. Peter McPherson’s $25,000 bonus is an insult to MSU’s underpaid faculty.
I am writing in response to the two political letters that were printed in The State News (“Michigan proposal goes against ban,” SN 9/21 and “Vouchers combine church and state,” SN 9/21). I would like to know why people write these letters, and why The State News feels they absolutely must print them? I write several letters to the editor a year.
