Children should learn creationism

The Supreme Court decision to reject the case of Rodney LeVake, a Minnesota biology teacher, is the latest defeat for parents who want their public school children to receive a competent science education.

Senate bill unfair for black voters

Andrew Goetz’s column (“ ‘Election reform’ bill...” SN 1/14) draws deserved attention to the problems Senate Bill 173 will inevitably create, but he fails to highlight the most disturbing facet of the Republican-led elimination of straight party voting.

Running away

Perhaps it’s unsettling that a week before we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. a recent Detroit News/WDIV survey indicates 55 percent of whites and 52 percent of blacks in the Detroit area think segregation is sometimes, usually or always a very good idea. The survey results remind us the civil rights leader’s dream has yet to come true.

Cash crunch

While budget woes can lead to heated debates over government spending, East Lansing city officials are doing a commendable job in trimming the city’s planned expenditures for the next fiscal year. The city council will vote Tuesday on $695,875 in proposed cuts to the East Lansing budget, which could eliminate police overtime, delay city sidewalk plans and stop the airing of planning commission meetings on cable television.

Poor sports

Children’s sports should never become a matter of life or death. The case of Thomas Junta, the Massachusetts hockey dad who beat another father to death at their sons’ practice, illustrates that point. Cant blame T.J. for rushing at chance

While it is extremely difficult to say goodbye to T.J. Duckett, an associate of mine helped me cope with the pain through some easy rationalization. The underlying reason we all came to college was to get a job, whether it be in agriculture, education, engineering ... or the NFL.

So much for a return to life as normal. It seems the terrorists that struck New York and Washington, D.C., on Sept.

Added voice

The Residence Halls Association should be commended for welcoming more voting representation for lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender students into its representation. RHA already hosts a representative from the Alliance of Lesbian-Bi-Gay-Transgendered Straight Ally Students.

COMMENTARY

SN wrong in stance on church role

Contrary to the editorial (“Bad Break,” SN 1/9), the church’s job and responsibility in society is not to condone society’s moral missteps under a blanket canopy of “love and tolerance,” but rather to provide a beacon of light to illuminate man’s shortcomings.

Legislation fair for all health clinics

The state Legislature did a good thing in changing the funding priority for family planning agencies (“Planned Parenthood faces funding cutbacks,” SN 1/8). The goal for the bill mentioned in Tuesday‘s article is to divert funds from abortion-related organizations to those that promote family health.
