Some turn blind eye to offensive situation

I wonder what would have happened on this campus if a student organization walked into Brody Complex - an area of campus that has a large black population - wearing black face and offensive shirts that portrayed every stereotype and racist comment in creation.

COMMENTARY

Peaceless

If the crowds gathered outside the state Capitol on Friday really intended to promote peace in the Middle East, they would have chanted in unity instead of forming two polar groups positioned on opposite sides of the sidewalk.

COMMENTARY

About time

Although it’s been almost four months since a sexual abuse scandal in the American Catholic Church began sweeping across the nation, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church finally has summoned American cardinals to the Vatican to discuss the issue. Pope John Paul II’s invitation is better late than never.

COMMENTARY

Weed out

The national headquarters of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity should heed Friday’s request of its MSU branch to review the chapter’s membership.

T-shirt issue blown

I am writing, as I expect many people will, regarding the Pi Kappa Phi suspension. If this isn’t a clear-cut case of free political speech, I don’t know what is. Of course they were ridiculous T-shirts.

COMMENTARY

Pi Kappa Phi wrong

I am writing in regard to the actions of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. I find it disgusting that this “nondiscriminatory” organization would be so blatantly offensive toward a group of fellow human beings.

SN shouldnt sellout by advertising U-M

I believe The State News needs some better communication among departments. On Tuesday’s front page the teaser quote from an article on page three stated, “We wouldn’t want the University of Michigan to come here and recruit undergraduates to their university.” The State News should read this and listen to its readers because the very same paper had an ad on page 10 for, you guessed it, the University of Michigan.

Playboy markets women as things

Ryan Holden is misunderstanding the meaning of degradation of women when he states that Playboy’s purpose is for entertainment, not to degrade women (“Playboy ad not part of the big problem,” SN 4/10). The women who wrote letters to the editor prior to Holden about the Playboy ad were arguing against the use of women’s bodies to sell products.

Role model

For the day-to-day newspaper readers who don’t give much thought to the people who work behind the pages, the life of Robert G.

COMMENTARY

Good faith

It’s always good to reach an agreement without having to resort to extreme measures - especially those that would leave both parties dissatisfied.

COMMENTARY

Dont knock Indian group if not helping

This is in response to the letter to the editor “Cultural show poster has incorrect map” (SN 4/8), regarding how the Council of Indian Undergraduate Students committed a gaffe in regard to its annual cultural show, Satrang. If you were actually present at Satrang this year, you would see for yourself how clearly we represented the various regions of India.

COMMENTARY

Cheney actions dont represent U

The possibility that Vice President Dick Cheney might speak at an MSU commencement is disturbing (“Cheney might speak to ‘U,’ SN 4/11). Not only is he an active part of an administration that has mounted an unprecedented campaign to restrict the public access to information about goings-on in the federal government, he has personally refused to reveal the sources of advice he received during the formulation of a draft version of the Bush administration’s energy policy.

Making best of job helps better self too

This is in response to the letter to the editor “Change jobs if you want more benefits” (SN 4/8). You can’t walk in another person’s shoes, but it seems like Chad Jordan is doing what he can to improve his lot in life.

COMMENTARY

Underwood years not worth honoring

In the letter “‘U’ should honor Underwood’s tenure” (SN 4/10), Richard Goldman should take a second to think about one of Clarence Underwood’s biggest accomplishments, or should I say one of his biggest faults, before leaving the office of athletics director.

COMMENTARY

SN not out to make greeks look bad

Why is there a tendency for members of the greek system to turn articles written about greek incidents into an anti-greek issues (“Article portrayed greeks negatively,” SN 4/11)? Stop trying to portray yourselves as the victims.
