Christian values go beyond politics

I would like to personally thank David Thompson for making me realize that I enjoy "environmental destruction, corporate abuse, war and violence, oppression of those with alternative lifestyles and refusal to assist in welfare for low-income citizens" simply because I am a conservative.

Out of time

The East Lansing City Council has already rained on the parade of party-loving students and ASMSU's umbrella is too small to stop the flood. Under the city's revised party-noise ordinance, offenders face a minimum of three days in jail and a $500 fine for a misdemeanor offense and a $1,000 fine for a civil infraction. Four party hosts drowned in the city council's storm last weekend as they were cited with misdemeanor offenses. As the puddles get deeper, MSU's undergraduate student government has finally stepped up to try to calm the storm.

Stabilizing service

It is the responsibility of the Residence Halls Association to keep close tabs on how student tax money is being used. After five years of having a contract with Waste Management for the campus recycling program, RHA is doubting whether the collected materials were recycled last year.

Liberals aren't only people who care

You know the way your stomach feels when you are sick? Well, I distinctly remember that same exact feeling in my stomach as I read David Thompson's column "Christian beliefs don't belong with conservative actions" (SN 9/9). I don't blame him for the bad column, but I do think he is misinformed.

Not a crime to hurt someone's feelings

I would like to offer my support of Jason Miller's "Standard for Free Speech is Truth" (SN 9/3). In view of both the letter and the spirit of the First Amendment's guarantee of freedom of speech, we must understand that both our personal responsibilities and our constitutional liberties are both equal and valid.

Hazing penalties should be the same

In April 2002, the MSU greek panel found Pi Kappa Phi in violation of the system's anti-hazing and anti-discrimination policies and ordered the fraternity to write letters of apology and attend educational seminars.

COMMENTARY

Stop and go

MSU's campus was built at a time when officials did not anticipate thousands of cars on its roads daily.

COMMENTARY

Christian beliefs not represented

Hallelujah for David Thompson's column contradicting the long held belief that Republicans best serve the Christian vote "Christian beliefs don't belong with conservative actions". Although President Bush consistently reminds the public that he reads the Bible every morning, does he not relay scripture to his actions the rest of the day?

Weapon wisdom

It doesn't make sense that someone should need a gun while they are swimming. But an East Lansing gun ordinance, forbidding the possession of concealed weapons in such areas as the Hannah and Bailey community centers, the East Lansing Public Library and the Family Aquatic Center, is being repealed after similar local bans in Ferndale were challenged and defeated by the Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners. Last November, the local ordinance was approved in East Lansing by a 4-1 vote.

Stripper story has inappropriate focus

I just read the Monday edition of The State News and would like to say that I am appalled the newspaper would run a full-page story, if you call it a story, on a supposedly straight stripper from the greater Lansing area. I would like to add that I am offended that the newspaper even made the whole page color, as compared to the rest of the paper, which is in black and white.
