Hometown feel

East Lansing's application for a grant from Gov. Jennifer Granholm's Cool Cities initiative should be used to add unique flavor to the downtown area. The city, along with more than 100 other cities, recently applied to receive $100,000 from the initiative in order to jump-start projects to revamp the city.

Pothole haven

A wise man with impressively braided hair once said: "Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway/We're the best of friends/Insisting that the world be turnin' our way/And our way/Is on the road again." Willie Nelson probably has lived three lifetimes' worth of experience on the highway.

Perez puts himself in the violent middle

I am writing in regard to your recent article on Michael Vicente Perez's experience in the West Bank ("Caught in the middle" SN 3/31). Personally, I would like to know how the Michigan Peace Team could be described as nonviolent or supporting "peace." To begin with, Perez states that he would "stay in the houses of families whose children had been suicide bombers and be there to hopefully prevent the house from being demolished." How exactly does protecting those who give aid and support to terrorists in any way bring "peace" to the Middle East?

Costly hoax

Wisconsin detectives' search for a woman's abductor should not be criticized even if the so-called victim made him up.

Common sense, not law should rule road

This letter is in response to what people should refrain from doing while driving "Driving don'ts" (SN 3/24). I am in complete agreement with the article because I am on a crusade against the stupid decisions people make.

Voting record shows Kerry anti-military

Andrew Goetz paints a picture of John Kerry as a committed supporter of the armed forces "Kerry's campaign jump-started by veteran's Vietnam rescue" (SN 3/31), but Kerry's actions immediately following his service and voting record in the Senate say otherwise. Kerry, while under oath, tossed out wild and unfounded accusations of war crimes in Vietnam before a Senate committee in 1971.

Temple trouble

The Third Noble Truth of Buddhist principle tells us that suffering can be overcome, that true happiness and full contentment are not only possible, but available to those who seek it. Buddhist philosophy also tells us that life itself is suffering, and that inevitable suffering is the result of human nature, without any good or evil undertones and regardless of your level of happiness.

Bad possibilities

A recently passed law might have negative implications for the future of a woman's right to choose. President Bush signed a bill on Thursday that states it is a separate federal crime to harm or kill a fetus in the process of assaulting the mother.

Athletic bigots

Every year, a handful of over-the-hill jocks make the news with an off-the-cuff remark they'd immediately prefer to take back.
