Search party

The decision to limit a presidential search to six weeks and to one campus did nothing short of enrage some faculty and students.

Stand up

With the race for the next president well on its way, there's a local void within the Republican Party. Three days into the Republican National Convention, there has not been a local representative from Michigan on the front line of the GOP to answer to the media or to enhance the awareness that Michigan is a key state in President Bush's bid for re-election. With Michigan a swing state, it is in the best interest of the Republican Party to feature a spokesperson from Michigan to address the RNC this week in New York City. Republicans have control of both of Michigan's legislative chambers, the attorney general's office, the secretary of state's office and a majority of Michigan's 15 U.S.

Convention nurtures job hunt

Walking up at least three flights of stairs, I found myself blanketed by men and women, their complexions different shades of brown, almond, cocoa and tan.

Unwelcome

Blasting rental housing to rubble is not the smartest way to win the hearts of college students. Then again, warm student-resident relations never seem to be the modus operandi for city operations. Pending an approval of a $2.3 million loan from the U.S.

When opponents and advocates of a petition against gay marriage both speak out against an Aug. 23 Michigan Board of State Canvassers' decision, you know something is seriously wrong. The petition to ratify the Michigan Marriage Amendment act was filed on time with 464,243 properly certified signatures - outstripping the required 317,757 signatures needed to put gay marriage before Michigan voters this November.

Mainstream media outlets contribute to dumbing down democracy

Political and cultural commentator H. L. Mencken is credited as having issued this caution: "We get the government we deserve." Certainly, most of the blame for our dysfunctional government belongs with "we the people" for not bothering to become educated about important issues and participate significantly in our democracy.

Genetics more complex than columnist believes

Evan Rondeau's understanding of science is as muddled as his logic in his piece "Infidelity runs rampant in nature." (SN 8/10). When Rondeau states that "(humans) are much more evolved ? than voles," he is actually saying that his understanding of natural selection is so poor that he really has no business commenting on the issue. Natural selection does not result in creatures more or less evolved, but rather varying levels of complexity in response to different selection pressures. Articles by ill-informed journalists like Evan Rondeau are much of the reason people are mislead about the role of genes, and the impact of genetic technology.

Marching on

There has always been the notion that suggests many Americans hold a nonchalant attitude about political issues.

RNC in NYC

The Republican Party has assembled the right team of speakers for its national convention. The party is poised to bring home its ideology with a prime-time lineup that includes politicians who are influential both inside and outside the party line, such as U.S.
