Vote for quality of life on Election Day

In about two weeks, we will be electing a president and a vice president who will lead our nation during the next four years. We have a choice between the existing policies of an administration that cares nothing for the lower and middle classes of our society or a candidate who has better solutions that will include all classes and all levels of income.

Cheney has nothing to be 'angry' about

I am writing in response to John O'Connor's column "Dems made family members fair game in presidential election" (SN 10/19). He states that Elizabeth Edwards "completely misses the point." Unfortunately, John, you are the one who misses the point. Did you not read the very quote you included from John Kerry at the debate?

Backfire

The gloves were off Friday on CNN's "Crossfire." In one corner was political analyst and uptight conservative Tucker Carlson.

Columnist reveals own 'heterosexism'

I am writing in response to John O'Connor's column ("Dems made family members fair game in presidential election" SN 10/19). It's surprising to see someone who has such strong political opinions, yet is so breathtakingly ignorant of even recent political history.

Take the 'bitch' out of first down chant

I would like to congratulate The State News and staff on their editorial "Classless" (SN 10/18). As a student at MSU, I find it appalling that the student section, a section that should represent all the students of this institution, feels it is necessary to include such an obscenity in a long-standing tradition at MSU football games. The student section members have to realize that the stadium is filled with 70,000 other fans who may find the word "bitch" offensive. Anyone who sees the reaction of the Director John Madden and the Spartan Marching Band can tell that the new addition to this cheer is not appreciated. I find it refreshing to see The State News draw attention to this and hope that the students open their eyes before it is too late.

E.L., 'U' becoming increasingly unsafe

Friday night off campus, my son was attacked from behind by two white males at approximately 2 a.m. near the 7-Eleven on Grand River Avenue east of campus. He was walking home with a girl and was knocked down and kicked in the head from these cowards. He suffered a fractured cheekbone and stitches to his eye.

Columnist naive of cartoon's influence

As an avid watcher of all things anime, and especially the cartoon "Cowboy Bebop," I would like to thank Mike Townshend for his eye-opening article "Joe Camel should answer for our generation's tobacco addiction" (SN 10/13). Never before had I realized that because I enjoy the character Spike Spiegel that I must also do my best to emulate him. Upon reading the article I immediately jumped into my car and bought my first pack of cigarettes and lit up - trying to be just as "cool" as Spiegel. I also proceeded to buy a gun, dropped out of college, and have now started a career as a professional bounty hunter. In fact, I believe that we should all change our lives so they will be more like those of cartoon characters that we enjoy.

Worldly friend

We've raked MSU President M. Peter McPherson's name and persona through the mud before in print, on The State News Live - Fridays at 7 p.m.

Vote no on '2'

No matter how you view it, Proposal 2 will be a key issue on the Michigan ballot on Nov. 2. The State News has always spoken out strongly against any measure which would eliminate basic rights for any group in our country.

Classless

Second down and the first down marker is seven yards away. Sophomore quarterback Drew Stanton takes the snap from center, rolls left, tucks the ball and hits a wide hole plowed clear by his offensive line.

COMMENTARY

Gopher broke

When the Spartans walked away from Saturday's homecoming game with a blowout 51-17 win against formerly-ranked Minnesota, a lot of people wondered: "Where did this team come from?" Plain and simple, MSU played well and Minnesota didn't.

Taking charge

Kudos to the university for finally drawing up a plan to address the concern for this year's numerous sexual assaults on campus.
