Signal change

MSU students have to go elsewhere to become fluent in one of America's most commonly used languages - sign language. Sure, there are five classes available for students to get a slight grasp of the language, but the nearest place to obtain certification is located in the next town over.

Trustees need to allow coed living

OK, show of hands, how many people were aware that campus apartments prohibit coed housing? I, for one, was not. I can understand that this might be necessary in the dorms, but in the apartments?

Hockey team has to improve its game

This past weekend, the icers played a hockey series against the University of Michigan. I went to the game at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night, mostly because I miss going due to the NHL lockout.

Womens' basketball team needs respect

Where is the student support for the MSU women's basketball team? Not to insult the few students that do attend these games, but it is baffling to me that a top 10 team battling for the Big Ten title draws such minimal interest from a student body of more than 40,000 people. The atmosphere is fantastic with the band and cheerleaders; the team is hard-working, improving every game (and year), and the cost of tickets is minimal.

Everyone needs to follow traffic rules

Last week while driving to class down Shaw Lane, I came upon a backup in the traffic. As the people in front of me angrily passed in the left lane, I came to see what the cause of the backup was.

No smoking

Is Big Brother creeping into your home and pulling the cigarette from your mouth? It might seem like it with the recent anti-smoking policy enforcement of the Okemos-based Weyco Inc. The health care company fired four workers who refused to quit smoking. First Amendment senses tingling yet?

Paper reveals bias through columns

I see that The State News continues to print columns of crude hate toward Christians ("Despite popular belief, founding fathers were not all Christians" SN 2/7). It seems hypocritical that a newspaper - which claims to want tolerance and acceptance for the religious beliefs of others - seems set on printing an occasional column by Mr. Bice that almost invariably attacks a religion that many MSU students follow.

COMMENTARY

Article did not tell all about tax raise

In the article entitled "ASMSU votes to raise student taxes by $3" (SN 2/4), Mr. Hughes made it appear as though the tax increase is to fund scholarships solely as an ASMSU publicity stunt. Mr. Hughes did not mention that the goal of the entire tax increase is to help out the students who have financial need.

COMMENTARY

Columnist wrong in his assumptions

I am writing in response to the column, "Abortion has negative effects on mother and father, not just unborn" SN (2/3). In the article, Mark Myers addresses the "often overlooked" aspect of the impact that abortion has on women. The tone of revelation expressed in the article is appalling.

Ta-ta, tailgate

After reviewing the 2004 Fall Celebration Survey, it seems incredibly likely the MSU Board of Trustees will use the results to support making tailgating restrictions permanent.

COMMENTARY

Women entitled to choose an abortion

In response to Mark Myers', "Abortion has negative effects on mother and father, not just unborn" (SN 2/3), I'd like to say I'm sorry that some women regret their choices, but that does not mean that others don't deserve the right to choose.

COMMENTARY

Myers' position not supported by truth

It is one thing for Mark Myers to state his opinions on abortion's unjust violation of human rights "Abortion has negative effects on mother and father, not just unborn" (SN 2/3). It is entirely another thing for him to feed into the incorrect medical myths about abortion with no references at all. I would refer him and others to the recently published article in a reputed medical journal, available through the MSU Libraries: "Induced Abortion: An Overview for Internists." The two physician authors of this article write that "the risk for hemorrhage severe enough to require blood transfusion is remote" and that "premature birth, infertility, ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, and adverse pregnancy outcomes are not increased in frequency after abortion." The authors also write, "induced abortion does not harm women's emotional health; for most women, it allows an overall improvement in quality of life.

COMMENTARY

Peace at last?

Although the Middle Eastern conflict between Israel and Palestine has been the same for many years, a cast of ever-changing characters has flowed through its political theater. Some of these characters have made steps to push peace forward, others back.

COMMENTARY

Tax trouble

Students can expect a possible increase in their taxes this year. The ASMSU Academic and Student assemblies passed a bill on Thursday to let students vote on a proposal to raise student taxes by $3 to $16.75.

COMMENTARY

Argument lacked real factual basis

I am writing in response to Mark Myers' column "Abortion has negative effects on mother and father, not just unborn" (SN 2/3). Myers' basic premise is a sound one - abortion does affect the mother and father of the fetus, as well as other family members and friends.
