Ordinance necessary due to residential complaints

I was surprised at the lack of thought that was put into "It's inhumane to kick out homeless" (SN 12/5). Though the writer of the article had supporting reasons as to why an ordinance should not be passed to remove homeless from city parking ramps, a few important points were missed. If a homeless person asked you for spare cans or some spare change, you could realistically be able to supply either one.

On Jan. 19, the MSU Board of Trustees will hold its first meeting of the year. It also will be the first board meeting for new Democratic Trustees Faylene Owen and George Perles, whose eight-year terms began Jan.

Will of people must not be ignored by university

The voters approved Proposal 2, a ban on some affirmative action programs, in November. I fail to see why Michigan's universities and major cities continue to ignore the will of the people and waste even more of our ridiculously high taxes on legal challenges rather than using it to reduce our tuition.

Politician expresses religious right

Last week, Keith Ellison took office as the first Muslim member of Congress. During his private ceremony, Ellison was sworn in with one hand on the Muslim holy book — the Quran. And alas, the country did not crumble and fall into the hands of our opponents when the Minnesota congressman's hand rested on the Quran during the ceremony. Prior to Ellison's private ceremony, he joined his fellow representatives for a public swearing in ceremony, where no holy book was present.

Have you noticed the racy photographs outside our East Lansing American Apparel store? How did they make you feel? Some images currently on display include a young, blond woman wearing a gray, tri-blend, cropped T-shirt and panties, and a young Hispanic man in a white, V-neck T-shirt and slim slacks.

University should create Prop. 2 plan

With the Dec. 23 deadline to comply with Proposal 2 long passed and the Dec. 29 appellate ruling that denied Michigan universities a six-month transition period, MSU finds itself scrambling to satisfy the requirements of Proposal 2. In the State News article "How could a ban on affirmative action affect the imprint of diversity on campus?" (SN 10/20), university officials seemed unclear as to what the implications of Proposal 2 would be if it were passed.
