I am writing this letter in response to "Definition of human life needs to be determined" (SN 1/30). Though I would without a doubt be considered a liberal, I can normally understand and respect where the other side of a debate is coming from.
Sometimes, a story comes along that is at once indicative of an era and so gleefully idiotic it would almost be funny — if it weren't so pathetic. Case in point, the now-infamous "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" bomb scare. The gist of it goes something like this: A couple of guys working for an advertising agency started a guerrilla marketing campaign for Adult Swim's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" movie by putting up lit signs depicting two of the show's characters giving the finger to passers-by in major cities such as Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Boston. After seeing the signs, which were placed anywhere from the sides of buildings to bridges, Boston residents did their patriotic duty and terrified themselves into action, calling the police and eventually summoning the bomb squad to come along and destroy the offending neon signs.
I am a resident at Twyckingham Apartments, and I would just like to speak out against your nothing but overly sensational and disgusting coverage of the incident at Twyckingham Apartments this past Monday morning, "Off-campus apartment robbed" (SN 1/31). Was it really necessary to state that "a 26-year-old Twyckingham Apartments resident felt the cold pressure of a gun fixed on the back of his head, and saw his blood soaking into the beige carpet of his first-floor apartment during the early hours of Monday morning"? A simple "victim was threatened at gunpoint" would have been plenty good enough.
Like most students at MSU today, I was still in high school during 2003 — the year John Bice reports there were abundant pro-war letters in The State News, "Supporters for Bush's Iraq war have mysteriously disappeared" (SN 1/30). Apparently, according to Bice, there have not been nearly as many since.
I am disappointed in Pete Nichols' portrayal of Generation Y in "Our generation needs to wise up, combat country's deterioration," (SN 1/29). Our generation is the creator of Facebook.com and the supporter of MySpace.com, Google.com and YouTube.com. Generation Y invented instant messaging and blogging, propelled alternative online news sources into mainstream media and revolutionized consumer business models.
I am appalled by the audacity your paper has to print such a scathing editorial of Israel, "Israeli use of cluster bombs unjust" (SN 1/29). Israel is a country that puts human rights higher than any other country that has been attacked over a sovereign border.
It seems the rift that exists between Sunnis and Shiites is not confined to Iraq. The disagreement and fight has spilled over into the United States. Recently, there has been an uptick in discord domestically between the two groups, with many of the recent encounters occurring in Dearborn, where 30 percent of the city's less than 100,000 people are Arabic, according to the U.S.

These articles have put a bad spin on what ultimately are positive projects and events put on by the city. In the photo story, it was suggested that a low student turnout at our centennial kickoff was due to the date and time of the event.

As a sophomore at MSU, I took a class that studied educational inequality in the United States, and I was shocked to learn some schools in low-income areas have "sewage days" the way we in Michigan have snow days.
