Test results poorer in urban areas

The majority of Michigan schools that failed to meet annual state standards on the MEAP test are located in urban areas around the state, according an MSU study released Thursday.MSU's Education Policy Center conducted the study by analyzing a list of 216 priority schools issued by the state in April.

Kresge features Inuit artwork

Three brightly colored fish captured the eye of Virginia resident Martha Ruehlmann as she walked through the Kresge Art Museum Wednesday. "Three Fish" is the title of the Jessica Oonark painting which features fish colored in blue, orange and yellow, positioned one on top of the other. "I kind of like the one with the fish because it's not really colored in," Ruehlmann said.

Yo-yo master performs at E.L. park

Paul Kyprie is no yo-yo.But he can do about 200 tricks if given one.From around the world and pinwheels to walking the dog and loop-the-loop, Kyprie, or Yo-master Zeemo, can do them all.About 75 children and adults attended East Lansing's Play in the Park on Tuesday evening to watch and learn Zeemo's famed tricks.Sitting on lawn chairs and blankets the audience watched Zeemo's tricks in awe and laughed at his jokes and puns.

Employees to nominate 'U' bosses for sensitivity leadership award

For years Lori Strom received phone calls from MSU employees eager to complain or praise their supervisors.So two years ago Strom, a coordinator of the MSU child and family care resources, decided to create a way to reward bosses and supervisors across campus for their understanding, sensitivity and dedication to their employees with the annual MSU Supervisor Recognition Award."It was one of those light bulb moments," she said.

Vertical licenses being issued to minors

Michigan is making a simple change to driver's licenses to make it harder for minors to purchase alcohol.Secretary of State offices are now issuing vertical driver's licenses and identification cards in an effort to stop the sale of age-restricted products to minors."This law will literally have a sobering effect," Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land said in a press conference announcing the release of the new licenses.

Board gives highest honor to 10 professors

The MSU Board of Trustees approved the designation of 10 MSU faculty members as university distinguished professors. The title is the highest honor a faculty member can receive at MSU.

The Capital Area Transportation Authority is changing the way passengers pay for their rides.A new fare system was needed because of the new technology in the buses, according to Kathy Lindahl, MSU assistant vice president for finance and operations.Beginning Aug.

Staff member selected to agricultural council

A staff member from MSU Extension has been selected for the Michigan Agricultural Electric Council. Roxanne Pillars, a dairy agent for MSU Extension, will sit on the 10-member council, which serves as a resource for farmers, veterinarians, Extension agents and Michigan agribusiness's.

Environmental groups protest

Lansing - The Capitol roared to life Wednesday morning with the angry buzz of chain saw-wielding environmental activists.The groups gathered on the west Capitol lawn to protest what they deemed the "systematic destruction of the national forests" under the Bush administration.Representatives of the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan, the National Forest Protection Alliance, the Sierra Club and the Alaska Coalition were on hand for the demonstration, which included a "21-chain saw salute." Kelly Dettmer, an Ann Arbor research group member, led the coalition's chain saw salute with three cries of "Timber," after which seven chain saws were raised and revved.Activists said they were upset about The Healthy Forest Restoration Initiative.
