Greeks award gala to honor community leaders

The second annual Greek Awards Gala will honor members of the MSU greek community today. Both the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils are coordinating the gala. The event starts with a banquet dinner at 7 p.m.

Report: State needs education cost strategy

Attending MSU is something Texas natives Julia Cardenas and Rosie Lozano thought they'd never be doing a year ago.The two thought a Big Ten education was something they'd never be able to afford so a journey to East Lansing stayed out of their minds.But when a representative of the MSU-College Assistance Migrant Program visited Texas, their future suddenly changed."For some of us it was one of the luckiest things that could happen," said Cardenas, who along with Lozano, is receiving a full scholarship for her first year thanks to the program.Now their futures seem brighter."I feel like I have more opportunities here than I have at home," Lozano said.

Lansing welcomes 4 businesses to revamped Old Town

Lansing - Jan Allen lived in Old Town when it wasn't so old. The Lansing resident would wait in a car on Turner Street while her grandmother grabbed a quick drink from one of the city's bars.More than 60 years later Allen has opened a coffee shop in the neighborhood across from the location of the bar her grandmother was so fond of."Old Town has always been a part of me," she said.

Whitmer accepts appropriations post

Entering her second term as East Lansing's state representative, Democrat Gretchen Whitmer was named House Appropriations Committee vice chairwoman Tuesday.Chosen by House Democratic Leader-elect Dianne Byrum, Whitmer will serve for the 2003-04 session.

Four new businesses open in Old Town

Lansing's Old Town becomes slightly newer with four businesses opening their doors today. Lansing Mayor David Hollister will welcome the stores with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m.

Secretary of State-elect Land sets goals, team

Doctors, lawyers and pollsters will make up Secretary of State-elect Terri Lynn Land's advisory committee and transition team. Land announced Monday she would be working with a nine-member advisory committee and the transition team, along with the current Secretary of State Office to ensure a smooth transition. With a fluid transition, Land says, her goals for the office could be completed.

After steering East Lansing bars and restaurants toward responsible service for four years, Joe Bell is ready to let some "fresh blood" take the lead. Bell, the co-director and one of the creators of the Responsible Hospitality Council, has handed over his leadership to two new leaders. Staples sets new selling trend

In a move that environmental awareness groups hail as victory, office supply chain Staples Inc. announced plans last week to move toward selling environmentally friendly paper products. Staples announced new guidelines in which the company will attempt to average 30 percent post-consumer recycled content in all paper products, phase out purchases of paper products from endangered forests and create an environmental affairs division to report on the new guidelines' results.

Year-end housing initiative launched

A year-end fund-raising campaign to strengthen the initiative of providing quality and affordable housing was launched by the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition today in Lansing. The housing coalition, a nonprofit housing developer, will top off its campaign with a free holiday open house at two of its restored Lansing historic homes from 4:30-6:30 p.m.
