'U' rioters sentenced

Four MSU students were sentenced to jail time on Wednesday for their roles in the March 28-30 disturbances which resulted in more than $40,000 in damage to the city and campus. Three of the students were banned from state-funded university campuses for one year.

Friends grieve over student

Melissa Timte wanted to work with children and one day live in Texas, said friends of the child development senior who died Tuesday evening at Sparrow Hospital. Her mother, Jacqueline Timte, of Canton, Mich., reached at home Wednesday, said her daughter "absolutely loved life." "I remember the twinkle in her eyes, her smile, her fun sense of humor," Jacqueline Timte said. Melissa Timte, whose 21st birthday was Monday, was hospitalized since Sept.

Tuesday evening was a pampering soiree for MSU research associates Gia Pham and Betsy Askin at the Douglas J Exchange "fun and beauty" night. As Pham chewed on a piece of quiche and Askin ate a chocolate-covered strawberry, they browsed the wall of sale products and contemplated whether to get a hair consultation. "I want to take advantage of the 20 percent off," Pham said.

E.L. Public Schools force superintendent to retire

East Lansing Public Schools will soon be looking for a new leader, as board members voted Monday night to terminate the superintendent's contract in one year.Thomas Giblin has served as superintendent for six years and Board members voted 4-3 in favor of forcing him to leave.

Charity to celebrate 35th anniversary

The Cristo Rey Community Center will celebrate its 35th anniversary of service to the Lansing area with three community events during Hispanic Heritage month. An automobile and motorcycle show will be held from 10 a.m.

Paper pilots win tickets

White airplanes flew far and high Saturday afternoon, speeding past bustling shoppers as part of 88.1 The Light's Ready to Fly Paper Airplane Contest. The contest, part of a promotion for Christian pop band FFH's Ready to Fly tour, took place at Meridian Mall in Okemos. Participants of all ages were invited to make and fly a paper airplane to compete for tickets to the FFH concert and an ice cream sundae party with the artists. "Our son loves to make paper airplanes," said Trish Payne of her son Jordan.

'U' team competes in go-kart race

As the sound of screeching tires and the aroma of burnt rubber filled the air, Jon Denton watched his racing teammates speed around the Meijer parking lot. Denton, a member of the MSU Formula Racing Team, attended the first stop of the Red Bull Cheever Racing Go Kart Competition on Thursday afternoon. The engineering arts senior said the team was invited to the event at Meijer, 2055 W.

Current and potential members of the greek community will rush to campus this weekend for the first annual Go Greek Barbecue to kick off fall recruitment. "We have never done anything quite like this," said Suzie Luplow, Panhellenic Council vice president for external affairs.

Author donates portion of book profits to 'Ear'

The author of a fictional novel chronicling a victim of sexual abuse will donate a portion of the book's profits to a local crisis center. Lansing resident and 1996 MSU graduate Jim Hines plans to give part of the profits from his novel "Goldfish Dreams" to The Listening Ear Crisis and Intervention Center, an East Lansing-based organization that offers counseling for depression, suicide, loneliness, sexual assault, grief and other related issues.
