While warm temperatures are drawing more people outside this time of year, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is reminding Michigan residents to step up their safety in her “Be Safe, Be Seen” campaign.
As a way to promote appreciation and conservation of Michigan’s outdoors, the Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, is hosting the state’s annual summer Free Fishing Weekend Saturday and Sunday. The DNR has held two separate free fishing weekends every year since 1986, the second being in February, said Lynne Thoma, departmental technician with the DNR.
The temperatures are rising in Michigan and as common summer activities like barbecuing, campfires and fireworks begin to increase, so are concerns about fire safety.
The number of rabid animals in Michigan has been increasing annually, resulting in raised awareness on the potentially fatal disease. Last year Ingham County had more reported rabid animals than any other county in Michigan with 29 animals.
