Students race to finish 48/5 Film Contest

Ten teams went head-to-head in a 48-hour filmmaking competition Friday through Sunday to write, produce and edit five-minute movies in the East Lansing Film Festival Spring 48/5 Film Contest. The winning films will be shown as part of the 13th annual East Lansing Film Festival on November 10-18.

For some businesses in downtown East Lansing, students leaving in the summer means a shift in clientele, preempting more local than student-based business. Although East Lansing businesses experience a drastic decrease in student clientele, attracting crowds from the community helps keep businesses steady during the summer months.

Lansing Bike Co-op provides help for cyclists

For Tim Potter, being around bicycles — fixing them, selling them and riding them — was a big part of growing up in Okemos and his years at MSU. Potter, now the manager of the MSU Bikes Service Center, was part of the East Lansing Bike Co-op in the 1970s and has provided some of his past experience and advice to the newly organized Lansing Bike Co-op leading up to its Spring Launch Party held Wednesday.

Fieger to make decision on gubernatorial candidacy

Detroit attorney Geoffrey Fieger could become the Democratic front-runner in the gubernatorial race if he decides to pursue candidacy. Fieger said Monday he would make a decision about his candidacy by the end of the week and is preferred over the other Democratic candidates, according to a poll of 400 Michigan residents.

Beloved primate dies at local zoo

A 28-year-old female mandrill — likened to Rafiki in Disney’s “The Lion King” — named Gladys died Wednesday evening at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo, 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Gladys first arrived at the zoo in 1989 after she was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1982.

Students renovate area school

When the Reo Elementary School Rockets come into class Monday, they’ll be writing about something new they see, something “exceptional” — it’s the word of the week. And considering the extent of renovations made by the MSU branch of the Student Michigan Education Association, or SMEA, on Saturday, there will be a wide variety of things from which to choose.
