LANSING - The Michigan State Police hopes it has the number to stop violence in schools. Police, education and government officials unveiled a new anonymous hotline Wednesday for students, parents and teachers to report threats in Michigan’s schools.
Stepshow raises money for charity
Eleven acts, dressed in costumes using props ranging from wood canes to soda cans, rallied those attending the Greek Week annual tradition of Stepshow on Tuesday with rock-stomping beats.The event held, at the Auditorium, was part of a series of events held by greek chapters during the spring tradition known as Greek Week, which runs through Saturday.Greek Week co-chairwoman Jackie Kim described Stepshow as an “amazing stomping, clapping, body moving choreographed show.”“It is one of the more adrenaline running and exciting performances that we put on during Greek Week,” the nutrition science senior said.
Students, community observe day of silence
Members of MSU’s Alliance of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay and Transgender community and its supporters will be silent today, as part of Pride Week’s National Day of Silence.The day is designed to draw attention to those who have been silenced by hatred, oppression or prejudice.“There’s so many LBGT people who are silent and invisible everyday,” explained Doug Copeland, president of Spectrum, a caucus group that represents the east campus LBGT community.
Expansion of citys historic area proposed
Monica Zuchowski lives in a home that could be included in one of Lansing’s proposed historical districts, if the Lansing City Council votes to establish it. “It’s an old home,” Zuchowski said of her Walnut Street residence.
Council to approve plans for Earth Day celebrations
The East Lansing City Council is expected to approve plans to close Ann Street for Earth Day celebrations at today’s regular meeting. The April 22 holiday will include performances by local bands at the Ann Street Plaza and areas for environmental groups to promote conservation, recycling and waste reduction. Task force looks to help voters
Alicia Paulistin tried to vote in November’s election in East Lansing, but was turned away from the polls twice before she received any help.Although she eventually filled out an affidavit that allowed her vote to be counted, the English senior was confused by the problems she encountered.“They said I wasn’t registered to vote here - I know that I registered to vote here,” she said.
Student trip to Mexico emphasizes labor justice
Language and lifestyle may have been barriers but Adam Szlachetka, along with other students nationwide, learned they had one thing in common with Mexican workers - they were all fighting for a difference.Along with 14 other people, Szlachetka, an MSU political economy senior, traveled to Metepec, Mexico, two weeks ago for five days to speak with striking workers who work for the Kukdong Factory - one location Nike Inc. uses to produce clothing for many universities, including MSU.“The biggest thing about this trip was knowing that all the work we are doing is being noticed by the workers,” said Szlachetka, who is a member of Students for Economic Justice, a student-led movement against unfair labor conditions and universities involved with companies tied to sweatshop involvement.

LGBT Pride Week offers unity, entertainment
Despite chilly temperatures on Sunday afternoon, seven students tackled the weather during the Fruitbowl - an annual football game sponsored by members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community - at Walter Adams Memorial field. “We were hoping for a better turnout, but only the hard-core LGBT community is out here today,” public policy junior Chris Szmadzinski said jokingly during halftime.
