$2.3M grant for 'U' to aid science studies, economy

MSU received $2.3 million in grants Friday to help study harmful pathogens and water-borne microorganisms and to collaborate with Dow and Dow Corning to establish 12 new life sciences-based companies. The Michigan Life Sciences Corridor awarded two grants to MSU: A $1.2 million grant to the MSU Office of Intellectual Property and $1.1 million to the MSU Center for Microbial Ecology.

Recruitment fair to provide resources

Admissions personnel from more than 100 graduate programs around the country will be at the Graduate and Professional School Recruitment Fair on Tuesday. The fair runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

Red Cross simulates disaster

As marketing junior and mock tornado victim Theresa Watts entered the simulated disaster shelter Saturday, she was surrounded by Red Cross volunteers eager to assist her and other victims. As Watts registered her name in the makeshift shelter of a local church, she was handed a folded blanket and a small white bag full of toiletries to last about a week.

Barefoot and cloaked in an array of traditional Indian outfits, more than 70 people rhythmically moved in a cultural dance, as Garba music pulsated within IM Sports-West basement Friday night.

Experts tell campus to look inward for diversity

The first step in diversifying a campus is to look within the campus itself, organizers of the "Best Practices in Diversity at MSU" conference said Friday morning. A varied group of students, faculty, administrators and staff made up the 300 representatives who gathered Friday at the Kellogg Center for the conference, which aimed to exchange ideas between university colleges and units that would create more diverse classroom experiences. "We want to produce students who can function in what we consider a global marketplace," said Paulette Granberry Russell, senior advisor to the president for diversity and director of affirmative action, compliance and monitoring.

'U' to require ACT writing test

High school students applying to MSU for the fall of 2006 will be required to take the new, optional writing portion of the ACT, which will add a half-hour to the more than four-hour test.ACT spokesman Ed Colby said the decision to create the additional portion of the test was made in August 2002.

Drum circle bangs up as open mike alternative

A circle of about 15 people, including two first-time drummers, gathered to play at the coffee shop at 110 Charles St. "It's a lot of fun," drummer Manuela Kress said.

'U' community tapped by Bush

Two MSU students and Trustee Dave Porteous were named to the Bush-Cheney 2004 re-election leadership team Friday alongside veteran politicians, established business executives and millionaires.The early "grass-roots" campaign comes about a year before the 2004 election and focuses on states that were won or lost by less than 5-point margins in the 2000 election, said Marc Racicot, campaign chair for Bush-Cheney '04 from the Marriott East Lansing University Place, 300 M.A.C.

Free trade forum to feature poet-activist

Members of Students for Economic Justice are asking MSU students to join them and poet-activist Alixa Garcia for a discussion on free trade. Colombian native Garcia will share her experiences organizing against the Free Trade Area of the Americas at 8 p.m.

Education creates awareness for Domestic Violence Month

Lansing - Area residents are using education to respond to widespread domestic assault during Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October. In 2002, Lansing had almost 500 domestic assault arrests, the Lansing Police Department reported. "The only way that we break this cycle is if we educate people that this is what happens in domestic violence cases," said Judge Amy Krause of the Lansing 54-A District Court, the keynote speaker at a vigil at the Capitol on Tuesday evening. Several area support groups, including MSU Safe Place, Capital Area Response Effort and End Violent Encounters, Inc., collaborated in events which have drawn victims, survivors and advocates to create awareness for the national concern. In a rally Thursday afternoon, 75 people from across the state gathered at the Capitol to ask for clemency for 20 women.

Department supervisors recognized

Before most of campus was awake, employees from MSU's Office of University Development stood in quiet darkness, anxiously waiting to surprise two of their bosses during the 3rd annual Supervisor Recognition Awards.The MSU Fight Song blared from boom box speakers, on Thursday as Charles Webb, vice president of University Development, and Marti Heil, associate vice president of University Development, walked in the door of the second floor conference room at the Eyde Building, 4660 S.

Group to sponsor Indian dance session

Indian rhythm will flow Friday in the IM Sports-West basement at 8 p.m. at "Tarang." ASHA for Education, a volunteer organization which raises funds for educational projects in India, is sponsoring the event, the first fund-raiser for the organization. Participants will learn a dance called Garba/Raas and MSU's Bhangra dance team will perform.
