City Council makes plans for MSU, townships to join Greater Lansing Taxi Authority

With all parties on board, it will make the process for cab drivers in the area to get registered shorter, but also eliminate issues of inconsistency such as cab drivers having licenses to operate in the city of East Lansing or Lansing, but not the other that have occurred in the past. “What you really need is one uniform set of rules for the whole region because that’s what the taxi market looks like. It’s regional not jurisdictional," said Triplett.

MSU Community Music School provides opportunities for youth

MSU community music school (CMS) offers variety of camps for local individuals through the summer.  Sarah Bohan, communications coordinator at CMS, said, "MSU community music school is an outreach division of the MSU college of music." It is not necessary to be affiliated to MSU to take advantage of the music services from CMS.  They offer different programs to the community.

E.L. will implement new curbside recycling this fall

East Lansing has received a $125,000 grant from The Recycling Partnership to assist with a new curbside recycling system later this year. As a result of the the grant and matching funds from the city, new 96-gallon carts will be rolled out to East Lansing residents at no cost by early to mid-October.

VIDEO: Summer Solstice Jazz Festival celebrates 19 years of music and art

The 19th annual Summer Solstice Jazz Festival on June 19-20 featured musicians from all over the world and provided pivotal experience to youth jazz players. The festival was presented by the City of East Lansing, MSU College of Music and the Wharton Center for Performing Arts; with artistic direction from the director of Jazz Studies at MSU, Rodney Whitaker. “My favorite part is really hearing everybody perform, that’s what this is all about,” said Whitaker.

MSU Police warn community of phone scammers

MSU Police are alerting community members of East Lansing of a potential telephone scam. According to a press release from the MSU Police, several East Lansing community members have reported callers claiming to be police officers and telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest for tax evasion with the FBI and IRS.

Aquatic Center closed for weekend

The East Lansing Family Aquatic Center is closed for the weekend because of a pool leak. After the pool underwent a water treatment process Friday, the valves were closed but not sealed, causing water to drain out of the pool overnight. The outdoor water park, located at 6400 Abbot Rd., will reopen Monday. Other outdoor swimming options include Lake Lansing Park-South, located at 1621 Pike St., Haslett, and Hawk Island Park, located 1601 E.

2 killed in overnight motorcycle crash

Two people were killed early Saturday morning, around 1:47 a.m., after their motorcycle collided with a vehicle at the intersection of Durand Street and Albert Avenue, according to an East Lansing police statement.
