Izzo, Dantonio named best college coaching tandem in America

CBS Sports recently crowned MSU as having the top head coaching duo in basketball and football with Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio. The title is hard to argue against, given the amount of growth and accomplishment each program has had the last eight seasons – when Dantonio took the reigns of the football program. It is nearly impossible to refute Izzo’s resume as being one of the top coaches in college basketball.

Gerald Holmes comes through in the clutch when called upon

In No. 2-ranked MSU's first game of the season sophomore running back Gerald Holmes was the second back on the depth chart. In the Spartans 37-24 win over Western Michigan in week one, Holmes carried the ball nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown. Holmes had just three carries over the next two weeks and he watched as true freshman LJ Scott went from the third back on the depth chart to co-starters with redshirt freshman Madre London.

MSU cross country teams put on strong showing at Griak Invitational

This past weekend the MSU men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Minneapolis, MN for the Roy Griak Invitational.  The No. 25-ranked men won the tournament, while the No. 6-ranked women finished in second. The Spartan men were led by junior TJ Carey, who finished in seventh in his first race as a Spartan.  Freshman Ryan Robinson, also participating in his first race wearing the Green and White, finished close behind Carey’s 25:08, taking eighth-place with a 25:10.  “Ryan [Robinson] went out with the lead group, where TJ [Carey] moved up gradually before the two finished the final 2,000 meters together,” Coach Drenth said to msuspartans.com.  The women were led by junior Rachel Shulist, whose 21:32 gave her a fifth-place finish coming off her win at the Spartan Invitational.  The second and third finishers for the Spartans were junior Alexis Wiersma and freshman Erin McDonald, who finished seventh and 32nd, respectively, with a 21:36 and 22:29. “Rachele [Schulist]  went out with the leaders, while Ally [Alexis Wiersma] started a little more behind and ran really well through the field,”  Drenth said to msuspartans.com.  “The women did a better job of being patient and maybe were too patient.  They kept cutting the score in half throughout the race.” MSU will have a break this week and will return to competition Oct.
