Three members of the MSU wrestling team had impressive showings over the weekend at the Edinboro Open.Freshman Andy Simmons garnered the most success, recording five pins to take first place in the 141-pound division.

Glitch delays launch of new e-mail system

A new MSU e-mail Web site has been delayed due to a glitch in the software, computer lab officials said.The system, which would make Telnet e-mail access obsolete, will hopefully be launched before spring break, interim computer lab director Tom Davis said.Davis said the system's problem arose last week and needs to be fixed before students and faculty can access their revamped e-mail accounts.

Nature center hosts 'Owl Prowl'

Delta Twp. - While many of Mid-Michigan's animals may be in hibernation awaiting the first signs of spring, Woldumar Nature Center, 5739 Old Lansing Road, remains open. A variety of programs aimed at educating people of all ages to nature gives visitors firsthand experience. One program, "Owl Prowl," allows visitors the opportunity to observe owls on the five miles of trails on Woldumar's property and learn about their natural habitats. "The premise of 'Owl Prowl' is to expose people to owls and show what owls are doing this time of year," Program Director Bridget Booth said.

Columbia cartoon goes beyond humor

I would like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor about world events and happenings. I usually do not make a big deal about humor and comics and, on most occasions, I think the sketches are quite witty.

Hill, teammates are not worried about rankings

The MSU men's basketball team had only one game since last week's polls came out, but the Spartans didn't get any respect after a 67-62 overtime victory against Indiana on Saturday. Voters in The Associated Press Top 25 poll obviously weren't impressed with the Spartans' (13-8 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) road win, nor their three-game winning streak as MSU actually lost 20 votes in the poll. The Spartans received only 11 votes, just one week after picking up 31.

Updated pamphlet grades 'U' profs

Mark Grebner said it's time professors were graded, too. And with the release of his booklet "Grading The Profs" on Monday, Grebner said students will be able to see professors' ratings based on 200,000 student surveys taken by MSU during the past three years.

Shuttle comic had no respect for crew

I realize Nate Allen is entitled to his opinion, but he has truly gone too far this time. His "cartoon" depicting the space shuttle Columbia at the pearly gates was neither funny nor appropriate (SN 2/10). The State News should be ashamed of itself for printing such a disrespectful piece.

Parents question cuts for E.L. elementary

After touring Spartan Village Elementary School, Mark Luebker said he knew East Lansing was the place to raise a family."We were just blown out of our socks by (the school)," he said.But as he joined about 150 parents at a school board meeting Monday to raise concerns over the troubled budget, he said he doesn't understand why the district's leadership is making cuts."I'm mad," Luebker said.

As some students talked about being inconvenienced with proposed changes to tighten security on campus, Jonathan Martone spoke from experience."It was an inconvenience when I had a 6-inch knife to my throat," the James Madison freshman told about 50 students and faculty, including MSU President M.
