Freshman forward sparks Spartans in tourney

Chicago - In one of MSU's best defensive performances of the season, it was a surprising player that helped the Spartans dispose of Purdue. Freshman forward Erazem Lorbek showed tremendous poise throughout the contest in leading the Spartans (19-11) to 54-42 victory Friday afternoon at the United Center. The 6-foot-10 Slovenia native grabbed eight rebounds, seven on the defensive end.

'Hunted' offers pure, high adrenaline entertainment

Take a deep breath and plunge right in. "The Hunted" is a slick action flick featuring great action, fine performances and enough suspense to make you chew your fingernails off. Benicio Del Toro makes Rambo, the namesake of the film it will most likely be compared to, look like a bitch as Aaron Hallam, an AWOL special forces assassin who has apparently snapped after a bloody operation in Kosovo.

Julie Pagel knows exactly what she wants for her birthday - a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The junior forward's 21st birthday is today - two days before the March 16 committee selection date - but Pagel has already made plans to accept the belated present. "It's two days overdue, but nevertheless, it'd be a great gift," she said.

The State News has postponed running controversial advertisements from campustruth.org and One Truth indefinitely, Editor in Chief Kevin Hardy announced Wednesday. The ads achieved the necessary conversation and debate, and further publishing could cause "inflammatory responses," Hardy said. "I would not knowingly put something in the paper that would incite violence," he said.

War fears fuel protest

Lansing Township - Chained to a wheel of a Ford Topaz with a "No War" message spray-painted across its doors, Amy Field sat chanting "They shall go to hell!" "Hopefully, this is the beginning of a worldwide revolution," the East Lansing resident said, amid a throng of more than 30 colorfully dressed anti-war demonstrators carrying black banners and shouting against the roar of Wednesday's rush-hour traffic rolling past the Frandor Shell station on East Saginaw Street. "This might motivate people to step up and take their responsibility as American citizens." The protesters - made up of several groups, including Direct Action and People for Positive Social Change - assembled at the gas station to express their opposition against the war and its possible connections to foreign oil purchases. "We're protesting to save lives," Field said, sitting next to a cardboard sign stating, "Don't Kill Me For A Fill-Up." Tensions escalated as the sun went down.

'U' band deserves courtside seats

I would like to reply to the letter by Joe Stein, "Band belongs in the corner of Breslin" (SN 3/10). If you had half the commitment the MSU band students have you would not be posting such an idiotic remark.

Disaster preparation Web site launched by University Relations

MSU launched a Web site to help people prepare for terrorism, natural disasters or other emergencies Wednesday. "With the general increasing concern of terrorism post 9-11, we started looking at ways we could consolidate safety information in one Web site," MSU police Chief Jim Dunlap said. The site, http://beprepared.msu.edu, shows the current national terror threat level, as decided by the Homeland Security Advisory System and explains what each degree of threat means. As of Wednesday, the nation is at level yellow - which means a significant risk of terrorist attacks. Dunlap said the site, which is run by University Relations, is an effort to consolidate safety information from different organizations on and off campus into one comprehensive resource. "It really was an effort to try to bring in all the places at the university that had a different piece of the puzzle," he said.
