I find Kevin Hasse's interpretation of Puritan history, ("Puritans not to blame for problems," SN 6/25), to be morally reprehensible.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court decision declaring sodomy laws unconstitutional based on invasion of privacy invalidates a Michigan sodomy law, but the legitimacy of the state's gross indecency law remains unclear to experts and advocates. Two bills were introduced Tuesday by State Rep.
Lansing - Sharing an egg salad sandwich beneath a cluster of red, white and blue balloons, Audrey Myers and Pearl Shade discuss the patriotic decorations in the American Red Cross building. Together they have donated nearly 100 pints of blood, and on Monday the two volunteered to go under the needle once again at the Great Lakes Region Blood Services Donor Room, 1800 E.
Andrew Goetz was off the mark in his column dealing with affirmative action ("Conservatives inconsistent with policy," SN 6/26). What most Democrats and some Republicans do not realize is that affirmative action, and other similar programs, are fundamentally flawed.
East Lansing residents can stop putting off returning those overdue library books. It's amnesty month at the East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbott Road. Until July 31, all library patrons returning materials - no matter how late they are - will not have to pay any late fines.
A MSU faculty member will be leaving the green and white when she takes off for Berlin in September. Mei Zhuang, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, was named a Fulbright Senior Scholar and will live in Germany for 10 months, teaching and researching at the Technische Universitat Berlin. A while ago I wrote a column about the tragically growing trend of young murder victims due to their real or perceived gender transgressions ("Day offers remembrance, reflection on life's struggles", SN 11/21). The numbers are ever soaring, the victims and perpetrators alike getting younger, the murders ever more brutal. One of the many transgender hate crime victims was 17-year-old transwoman Gwen Araujo of Newark, Calif.
In trying financial times, it's not good public policy to also deny aid to those who need economic support, but needlessly forfeit money to the federal government. But Michigan is apparently doing both.
Creating additional jobs in Benton Harbor is a step in the right direction of rectifying the underlying issues that fueled the city's riots. But it's a shame it took such an uproar to call attention to the severe economic problems that encompass the area.

MSU researchers could receive $7.8 million in funding from the U.S. government if Congressman Mike Rogers can continue to win over the U.S.
Many of you who read The State News are MSU students. You didn't get there solely because you're a minority or a majority.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has still got it. After 12 years, Schwarzenegger dominates his role once again as the Terminator and is undoubtedly successful. Without James Cameron on board to direct and Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton to save the day, "T3" shines as a suitable legacy to their work. The T-101 (Schwarzenegger) has been sent back to the present once again to prevent the death of future resistance leader John Connor (Nick Stahl) from Skynet's faster, stronger and smarter terminator, the T-X (Kristanna Loken). The T-101's mission also is to protect innocent veterinarian Kate Brewster (Claire Danes), whose life also is intertwined - though less importantly than Connor's - in the path the future takes after Judgment Day. Together, John and Kate realize Judgment Day is coming sooner than they expected - within three hours.

Almost 25,000 students, faculty and staff members are without e-mail once again. Computer Center officials say the frequent outages are "unacceptable." After a weekend of no e-mail following repeated system failures, said Tom Davis, interim computer laboratory director, he hopes to have a new and improved mail.msu.edu up and running early today. But some students say the promise is too little too late. Telecommunication junior Chris Covington said trying to check e-mail that is rarely there is a nuisance, especially for off-campus students. "I've been trying to get important e-mails for the past few days." he said.
