Stay too Short

With the United States in conflicts against terrorism and Iraq, it's good to see our president spend time on a humanitarian mission - if only he had spent more time there. President Bush recently ended his five-day, five-country African tour in which he denounced slavery and pledged to fight AIDS and poverty in parts of the underdeveloped continent.

Cocker successful only as cover artist

A.P. Kryza chose to stand on a pretty big soapbox July 9 when he took on "cocky musicians" ("Cover artists should not waste breath on criticism" SN 7/9). I will agree the comments about Joe Cocker from Jerry Sprague were in bad taste but equally inappropriate were Kryza's own comments.

'BasketBowl' sells out, 75,000 expected

Fans of MSU or Kentucky basketball without tickets to the schools' Dec. 13 matchup are officially hard-pressed to find a ticket because "The BasketBowl" is sold out.After season-ticket holders and university donors from both schools claimed the first 50,672 seats, the remaining 19,028 tickets allotted to the general public on Tuesday sold out in a span of four days, according to the Ford Field Ticket Office.

COMMENTARY

Affirmative action needed, not vote

I somewhat agree with Carl Seidman in his letter "Poor, not minorities, should be rewarded." (SN 7/10). I agree the government should provide relief to poverty stricken communities and work toward bettering education, which is the primary source of inequality.

Lansing - Lugnuts center fielder Felix Pie has a bright future ahead of him. The 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic showed just how bright Thursday night in an 8-4 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Oldsmobile Park.Showing the patience of a veteran ball player, Pie walked three times on the night.

Lowering the legal blood-alcohol will help save both lives and funding, protecting our roads from both drunken drivers and poor road conditions. The state Senate passed legislation Thursday to decrease the legal blood-alcohol level from 0.10 to 0.08.

Kresge features Inuit artwork

Three brightly colored fish captured the eye of Virginia resident Martha Ruehlmann as she walked through the Kresge Art Museum Wednesday. "Three Fish" is the title of the Jessica Oonark painting which features fish colored in blue, orange and yellow, positioned one on top of the other. "I kind of like the one with the fish because it's not really colored in," Ruehlmann said.

Man charged in Emmons hall shed break-in

A Lansing man was arraigned Wednesday on charges of attempted breaking and entering, disobeying a police officer and unlawful possession of a weapon on campus. Jeffrey Fidler pleaded guilty before Judge David Jordan in East Lansing's 54-B District Court for carrying a box cutter while fleeing from police after trying to break into a storage shed outside Emmons Hall, a part of the Brody Complex. In court Fidler decided first to plead not guilty, but later changed his decision. "Might as well as get it over with," Fidler said before Jordan. All three charges brought against Fidler are misdemeanors.
