Greeks involved in 'U' community

Drop the stereotypes. MSU greeks say it's not all about what you see on MTV shows such as "Sorority Life" and "Fraternity Life." "The general public will watch this show and get a general idea that this is what fraternities are like, especially young people in high school who think about joining a fraternity," said Chris Braverman, a member of Delta Tau Delta. MSU greeks perform community service - on and off campus - throughout each academic year.

Lofts provide more space

As fall semester nears, MSU students will return to campus and take that first step toward setting up their room for the new school year - building a loft. For the past 25 to 30 years, MSU students have chosen to accommodate more space in their dorm rooms by having a loft built. University Housing Director Angela Brown said the word has gotten out about lofts because students have been contacted with flyers and heard of them through friends. "We don't encourage them because if not constructed properly, they can be a safety hazard," she said.

Cafeteria food easy to stomach with good choices

The transition from high school to the unknown world of college is like no other. There's the good: independence, parties and easy access to the opposite sex. Then, there's the bad: 15-page research papers, sky-high tuition and three-hour lab classes. But there is a gray area - the cafeteria. Sometimes it's good.

Police can search library records

Hundreds of MSU students use libraries every day, but what some don't know is the information they log into the system could be turned over to law enforcement officials.Under the 2001 USA PATRIOT Act, university officials can allow law enforcement personnel access to a student's library activities, such as book checkout and Internet usage, if they are suspected of terrorist activities. But many students say they are concerned the scopes of their private lives could be given out without their knowledge."It's an invasion of privacy, but I'm not worried because I'm not into stuff like (terrorism)," kinesiology junior Mike Keller said.Like many students, Keller said his library use is pretty innocent, mostly consisting of checking out class books. Some students said the university should post information on what would be available, if requested by law enforcement officials."If they had a sign by the checkout it wouldn't hurt," human biology junior Brian Hochstetler said.University officials admit they haven't publicized the information, but say they have not tried to hide anything from students.

Lugnuts fall flat against Quad City

Lansing - After a successful weekend, the Lugnuts were kept off the board in a 7-0 stomping from the Quad City River Bandits on Sunday in a rain-shortened matinee at Oldsmobile Park. The Bandits (27-34) took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the second off a triple from left fielder Garrett Guzman to score designated hitter Omar Burgos and center fielder Alex Romero. Lansing (35-24) had an opportunity to slice into the lead in their half of the frame, but third baseman Robinson Chirinos grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the chance. A costly error from Lugnut shortstop Buck Coats in the third allowed Quad City first baseman Danny Matienzo to cross home and increase the lead to three. With Lansing struggling to get its offense going, the Bandits tacked on two more runs in the sixth, courtesy another Coats error and a sacrifice hit. Coats has a team-leading 21 errors, but said his teammates' support allows him to keep his head up despite the loss. "People pick each other up, it's fun to be on a team like that," Coats said.

Support Spartan sports, don't whine

The editorial "Athletic antics" (SN 6/2) made me want to send a box of cheese to The State News editorial board to accompany the whining it did. If people want to hear whining they can listen to my 5-year-old brother, although even he likely would be able to grasp the value of "The BasketBowl." The idea of moving the game to Detroit would dissuade the most dedicated fans from attending is thought-deficient at best.
