Buses to solve crowding issue

The reflection of a bus driver's face normally can't be seen by the passengers riding in the back of the bus. But with one of Capital Area Transportation Authority's four new 60-foot articulated buses, the image is clear each time the bus turns another MSU street corner. "It's kind of like a Tilt-A-Whirl," said Pat Gilbert, director of marketing for CATA, about the new buses.

Bike impoundment policy disputed

A meeting between three students and MSU Department of Police and Public Safety about the bike impoundment policy has left the issue unresolved and the students unsatisfied. Anthropology graduate student Angela Jancius, her husband Daniel Sturm and genetics graduate student Paolo Struffi met with MSU police Deputy Chief Mike Rice on Thursday to discuss ways MSU police's bike impoundment tactics could be improved. "He observed everything with a cost-benefit analysis," Jancius said about Rice.

Jordan, Bird might play against 'U'

Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Scott Skiles might match up against Tom Izzo's Spartans this fall in what would be the greatest exhibition game played on the Breslin Center hardwood. Rumors circulated Tuesday on campus about the NBA legends competing against the Spartans in the preseason Magic Johnson All-Stars game Nov.

Seniors spark team workouts

Summer is usually a time to relax, but not in the case of the MSU volleyball team. Usually preseason is the time teams start practicing together, getting a feel for what they will be able to accomplish during the upcoming season. But with four seniors and 11 returning letterwinners, senior co-captain libero Emmy Miller and senior co-captain setter Nikki Colson wanted to get a head start on their competition.

Study shows class gap in nation's top schools

Almost three-quarters of students admitted into the nation's most elite schools come from upper and middle class families, according to a study by the Century Foundation, a social research group. The New York-based organization concluded that 74 percent of students at the nation's 146 most elite schools come from a privileged background.

Celebrities are auditioning for a new role in the Golden State - governor of California. Since the Gray Davis recall in California, celebrities ranging from Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt to the Terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger have been stepping forward and announcing plans for candidacy. Having a celebrity in a political position might not be a bad idea and should be taken seriously.

Lugnuts shut out Fort Wayne, 5-0

Lansing - Three straight wins and a 5-0 shutout of the Fort Wayne Wizards on Sunday at Oldsmobile Park have the Lugnuts thinking they've righted the ship.With so much of Lansing's recent slump coming off poor hitting and sloppy play, the Lugnuts combined to score four runs in the eighth off fundamental hitting and base running."Everything that we could do well as a club, we did today," Lansing manager Julio Garcia said.

Throughout downtown East Lansing last weekend, it wasn't unusual to hear the meshing sounds of world music from every direction.With five stages and a massive crowd, the Great Lakes Folk Festival completed its Friday-through-Sunday run without a hitch.

Online classes expand, get positive feedback

When students start classes in a couple weeks they will be able to access more online classes than ever before.There are 131 online classes scheduled for the fall semester - an increase from 117 during fall semester 2002.University officials say the increase comes from students wanting flexibility in their scheduling, as well as colleges wanting to expand their resources.

Yarmouth, Mass. - The mystery behind the two-week disappearance of two MSU students was solved Saturday as the couple was discovered in Orlando, Fla., the city where they met nearly five years ago. But the reason for disconnecting from their families and friends continues to puzzle those concerned.

Bay Harbor - The state of MSU was reviewed by the Board of Trustees and administrators at their annual three-day retreat last week.University officials reflected on how cutbacks in state funding affect MSU and planned how to deal with the issue for the academic year.

Cell phones recycled, funds restore Old TownLansing's Old Town MainStreet is instituting a cell phone recycling program for collecting and redeploying used and unwanted cell phones. The generated funds will be used toward the nonprofit organization that works to revitalize Lansing's Old Town district. The Charitable Recycling Program of Bloomfield Hills is collaborating the program with Old Town MainStreet and will give money received from cell phone collection back to the establishment.

BREAKING NEWS: Missing students found in Florida

Yarmouth, Mass. - Two MSU students missing for nearly two weeks from a vacation on Cape Cod were discovered Saturday, alive and well in Orlando, Fla., bringing much relief to worried family members. Justin Gouveia, 21, of Lowell, Mass., and Danela Alfaro-Lopez, 19, were reported missing by their parents last week after days of no cell phone or credit card activity.
