Jackson Althea Miles' insurance company won't cover the $23,000 medical bill she incurred after spending four days in intensive care, recovering from severe pneumonia. The 45-year-old Jackson resident's health plan, Jackson Health Plan, is provided for low- to no-income residents but does not cover many medical needs - including hospital stays. The thought of finding the means to pay the bill petrifies Miles, but a new MSU grant could help people in similar situations in the future. Last week, MSU announced the formation of the Michigan Center for Health Education Training in the Communities.
TV programs "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," "Boy Meets Boy" and "Will and Grace" have all had an impact on lesbian, bi, gay and transgender communities, several campus groups are saying. As LBGT representation in American society and media increases, members of the groups are questioning what the costs and benefits to LBGT communities are. Several representatives will lead a panel discussion Wednesday addressing how popular culture affects LBGT civil rights movements. The free presentation runs from noon to 1 p.m.
I would like to thank Sean Bertolino for writing his article "'U' shouldn't take things so seriously". Although I might not agree with everything that Bertolino said in his letter, his point was very well taken.
In the children's story "The Three Little Pigs," the pig who built his house out of straw might have had the right idea. A 20-member team at MSU's Composite Materials & Structures Center in the Engineering Building are making use of biological materials such as hemp, leaves, grass and straw to make construction materials that are one-fourth the cost and one-half the weight of fiberglass, renewable and biodegradable. "After 20 years, when a car's life is over, you can put it in the compost heap," said engineering Professor Manjusri Misra, who oversees the project. The team has been working since January 2002 on the biofibers they hope eventually will replace fiberglass.

There is nothing shallow about director Clint Eastwood's newest movie, "Mystic River." Instead, the dark and emotional tale of three friends is far deeper than just the basic murder mystery. The story unfolds in an Irish Boston neighborhood where three boys are forever changed.
MSU-DCL College of Law officials say legal disputes in the future will happen in negotiations, not in the courtroom. And they hope to train law students in negotiations in the seminar "Breaking Through Barriers" on Thursday and Friday.
I would like to begin by stating my disgust for the left-wing agenda of this newspaper. Also, I would like to respond to John Bice's column "There's a drink to subdue every bad decision Bush makes" (SN 10/16). I do not understand how Bice can blame the president for the poor air quality at Ground Zero after Sept.
Lansing mayoral candidates Tony Benavides and Virg Bernero met on campus Monday, in the first and only "official" debate of the 2003 election, to challenge each other's views on issues including same-sex benefits, public safety and recent allegations. The two men came together at the WKAR television studios in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building for the debate, which was moderated by "Off the Record" host Tim Skubick and WKAR radio host Matt Ferguson.
