McPherson returns to 'U'

MSU President M. Peter McPherson goes back to work on Wednesday - the same day that marks his 10th anniversary as president. McPherson made his first public appearance Saturday since his return from Iraq, answering questions about what he and his team had accomplished during his stint as the financial coordinator for the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance. "It's certainly great to be back on Michigan State's campus," he said.

Smoker guides 'U' past Iowa, breaks 3 records

Two incompletions didn't spoil Jeff Smoker's day. All his receiver wanted was a little attention, so it didn't matter when he dropped the second pass. With a boyish grin on his face, something that seemed so far away during the past year, Smoker tossed a Frisbee with little accuracy to "Zeke the Wonder Dog," the black Labrador that usually is a halftime show but somehow became an invaluable portion of the postgame festivities after MSU's upset win over then-No.

The State News should reconsider its editorial concerning deciding affirmative action issues by a statewide ballot "Duking it out" (SN 9/24). The equal rights of any minority will never be achieved by putting such issues up for a vote.

MIDDAY UPDATE: E.L. death still unsolved 3 years later

Police and family members are still searching for leads in a beating-related death outside an East Lansing bar three years ago this week. Tuesday will be the third anniversary of the assault on Brandon D'Annunzio in downtown East Lansing, which resulted in his death. D'Annunizio, a Livonia resident, was 24 years old at the time and was not an MSU student.

The death of Robert Palmer on Friday created a riptide throughout the realm of music. A heart attack killed the 54-year-old rocker, who gained popularity during the '80s with his music videos featuring legions of near-identical, seductive women. The music died, but the memories live on.

Historical festival depicts old ways

By Corinne DeVries Special for The State News Presenters displayed weaving, spinning, papermaking and Native-American artifacts inside interactive booths at the Woldumar Nature Center, 5739 Old Lansing Road in Lansing this weekend. The American Heritage Festival portrayed aspects of life in time periods from the French voyageurs to the development of the automobile. "It's a festival to depict life without the luxuries we have today," said Trina Taylor, activities coordinator for the center. Lansing area clubs, such as the Muzzleloading Gun Club and the Model Railroad Club staffed booths at the festival which attracted about 2,000 people.
