When I first came to MSU, I was appalled at the amount of litter on campus. Just about every other football Saturday brought plastic bags, pieces of cardboard and literally thousands of cans all over campus.

A proposed policy change that could drastically affect the way fraternities at the University of Michigan operate isn't likely to make its way to MSU, officials say. Administrators at U-M are considering requiring fraternities to have live-in advisers.

Miami downs Spartans in hockey, 2-1

The No. 15 MSU hockey team spent the last five minutes of tonight's game against No. 11 Miami (Ohio) desperately trying to fight back after giving up a slim 1-0 lead.After going scoreless following 40 minutes of play, Miami notched two goals in the third period to win, 2-1.The Spartans comfortably played with the lead, courtesy of junior forward Adam Nightingale just seven minutes into the contest, his eighth of the season.Nightingale tallied the goal as he crashed into Brandon Crawford-West, leaving the Miami goalie scrambling for his helmet and glove.But the first-line combination of Matt Christie, Derek Edwardson and Marty Guerin pulled through for the RedHawks - the trio's line combined for five points tonight.In fact, no other Miami player recorded a point other than those three.Guerin, a Lansing native, got the pass from Christie for the first goal just 54 seconds into the third.

Newest junior college recruit to add speed, size to 'U' roster

Spartans football landed yet another top junior college recruit for the 2004 season. Kenny Jackson, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver from Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, Calif., said he couldn't have pictured himself anywhere but East Lansing. "Going to MSU was something I had always been interested in," Jackson said.

Democratic candidate talks to 600 students

Presidential hopeful Howard Dean visited the Kellogg Center's auditorium on MSU's campus Thursday afternoon, entering the stage amidst a chorus of U2's "Beautiful Day" and a fierce "We want Dean" chant. Homemade political posters lined the walls of the auditorium, which couldn't hold the hundreds of people who showed up at the rally.
