Females need to step up, rock isn't just for males
Why become a rock star? Well, the girls, of course. People wouldn't believe the way females flock to successful musicians, unless of course they've seen it.

I don't quite know why I listen to people anymore these days. It seems like whenever I ask someone a question, I get the same, boring, no-thought-put-into-it response. Me: How are you? Them: I'm good. Me: How was the food? Them: It was good. Me: How are your parents? Them: They're good. All right, you get the point. Within the last month, I started doing some "research" for the musical "Cats," because my family and I had planned to go see it. I found two of my friends who went and asked them, "Did you like it?" Their response?
What is it exactly?: It's an end table and storage unit made from old pizza boxes. Stacked up tall and proud, the boxes not only provide a touch of art deco in a drab dorm, but also serve as a couch-side storage unit for your remote control, loose change or any other odds and ends. Usefulness factor: If those nasty old pizza boxes are pilling up in your room and you are low on room furnishings, this craft is for you.
With a heavy load of sweaters, blouses and pants slung over her arm, Lori Hornbeck shuffles around the first floor of the Hannah Community Center, ducking in and out of adjacent rooms. The Lansing resident was one of a dozen shoppers at the Classy Used Clothing Sale on Wednesday afternoon.
Everyone knows that sex sells, but what about the idea of making love and not war? The newest MSU Department of Theatre production, "Lysistrata - the Sex Strike," by Germaine Greer, will take a look at politics and the pleasures of dating from 411 B.C.
One thing that sucks about success is, the bigger the venue you play, the less time you're allotted to perform. But Brian Efros, bass player for Lansing-area jam band The Family Tree, said the opportunity to play with national acts such as Ekoostik Hookah makes the shorter set worth it. "We've played parties where we've played for, like, four hours before; we also throw together just a dandy 45-minute set," said Efros, a telecommunication, information studies and media sophomore. The Family Tree will bring its four-piece blend of funk, blues, jazz and rock to The Temple Club on Friday night when they open for beloved jam band Ekoostik Hookah.
After ASMSU's struggle last semester with a modified party noise ordinance in East Lansing, student leaders are urging city council members in Ithaca, N.Y., to avoid adopting a similar policy. At its Student Assembly meeting on Thursday, MSU's undergraduate student government voted to send a letter to the Ithaca City Council saying that the East Lansing ordinance approved in the fall was harmful to student-community relations. The East Lansing City Council approved issuing up to $1,000 fines and a possible three days in jail for hosts of the gatherings with party indicators.
The Big Ten is portrayed in the national media as the black sheep of the major conferences, and Tom Izzo doesn't like it. With the Big Ten's best record, MSU (16-9 overall, 11-3 Big Ten) is nearly a lock for the NCAA Tournament.
With rebel violence escalating in Haiti, U.S. officials are expecting refugees fleeing the war-torn country to try and make the United States their sanctuary.
By Bob Darrow Special for The State News "Rarely does a rock band combine explosive guitars with an intense longing for meaning," claims the official Web site for Switchfoot, the San Diego-based Christian rock band that played to a sold-out MSU Union ballroom Wednesday night. Trying to live up to that characterization proved to be a tough act.
Mel "Holy-Ghost Inspired" Gibson is prominent in the news these days. Mel belongs to a religious faith called "Catholic Traditionalist," an ultra-orthodox sect that views the contemporary Catholic Church as an illegitimate sellout to liberals and heretics.
India Pale Ales are one of my favorite styles of beer. When I first started experimenting with styles other than the traditional pilsner, the IPA was the first to hit me with a WOW.
MSU's 17th president will spend the next few weeks helping the University of Colorado establish whether charges that its athletics program promotes maltreatment of women are legitimate. John DiBiaggio, MSU president from 1985 to 1992, will serve as a liaison between Colorado President Betsy Hoffman, Chancellor Richard Byyny and the athletics department, Colorado spokeswoman Jeannine Malmsbury said. Byyny said DiBiaggio was an ideal candidate based on his credentials. "Dr. DiBiaggio brings an enormously distinguished background and experience that is directly pertinent to the situations we are facing," Byyny said in a statement.
After reading the opinion page on Monday, I, too, was shocked at the choice of word Nate Allen chose to use in his editorial cartoon (SN 2/23) about the gay marriage issue. After thinking about it, I, too, realized that this is a word that people use every day as an insult to describe homosexuals and even heterosexuals.
Forget about all the controversy surrounding "The Passion of The Christ." Don't go into it thinking you'll see a harshly anti-Semitic film.
Tuesday morning, President George Bush made a speech declaring that we must protect the vital and ancient institution of marriage, which is recognized by every religion (nice way to include everyone in your ridiculous stance, Dubya), because apparently he feels that same-sex marriages will ruin that institution. All one has to do is watch "The Ricki Lake Show" for about five minutes to see that degenerate men and women everywhere do a damn good job at disgracing that institution themselves.
I would like to take a moment to commend The State News for publishing an article that so many young woman should read ("Break glass in case of EMERGENCY" SN 2/24). So many MSU students are unaware of all the options that exist for them.
I am not sure what all the fuss concerning gays getting married is all about. It appears that many people are confusing the legal concept of marriage with the religious concept.
The Greater Lansing Vintners Club and the MSU Museum are teaming up for the ninth annual Wine Tasting Benefit from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
