An MSU alumnus and terrorism specialist has convinced some legislators it's worthwhile to begin devising plans to thwart terrorist efforts in the state. Peter McPherson continued lobbying efforts Wednesday to bring a $1 billion nuclear science project to MSU's campus.McPherson met with the state Senate Economic Development, Small Business and Regulatory Reform Committee to reinstate the value of housing the Rare Isotope Accelerator at MSU.The RIA would help scientists look into the origins of physical compounds on a highly microscopic level, which could lead to advancements in all aspects of life - from medical breakthroughs to environmental research."There's basically very strong support of it and the hearing was an opportunity to get more information out and gain support," McPherson said.The committee voted 5-0 to on the resolution that urges the U.S.

Plan seeks to integrate 'U', law school

For almost 10 years, MSU-DCL College of Law has affiliated itself with the university, but Provost Lou Anna Simon's liberal arts reorganization proposal calls for the two entities to bridge the gap between academic programs. In the report, Simon said MSU-DCL should be more integrated with the university by "building connectivity with undergraduate programs, the professional schools and health programs." Among future cross-college partnerships will be the development of environmental policy, health law and intellectual property law programs. The move to integrate is nothing new for the law school, MSU-DCL Dean Terence Blackburn said, but it has been a gradual process. "This dialogue has been going on with many different colleges and programs across the university," he said.

ASMSU criticizes BAMN

For the first time in at least four years, an ASMSU chairperson had to break a deadlocked vote Tuesday night. Chairperson Jared English broke the tie to pass an Academic Assembly bill that stated MSU's undergraduate student government condemned the actions taken by the Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action & Integration and Fight for Equality By Any Means Necessary, or BAMN, at a MSU College Republicans meeting last week. Barbara Grutter, plaintiff in the University of Michigan Law School admissions case, spoke at the meeting while BAMN members countered her views.

Convictions on charges of murder and attempted murder would add to existing criminal backgrounds of the two men suspected of involvement in Sunday's shooting at an East Lansing 7-Eleven. Walkmen bring experimental rock to 'U'

The second and most recent release from the East Coast's The Walkmen shows a more seasoned and experienced indie band emerging from the Big Apple's garage-rock scene. "Bows + Arrows" was released in February and already has been recognized by the band as its first successful album, compared to 2002's release, "Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me is Gone." Officials try to thwart mail virus, stop more outbreaks

MSU Computer Laboratory staffers were busy Wednesday answering questions from faculty, staff and students about a new variant of the Beagle/Bagle e-mail worm that hit the campus e-mail system Tuesday, tricking many users into downloading infected file attachments. The e-mails are from false addresses such as management@msu.edu, noreply@msu.edu and support@msu.edu, or in some cases, addresses of members of the MSU community.
