MSU cafeterias might not label its food "Atkins-friendly" in the midst of a nationwide low-carbohydrate dieting craze, but officials say they offer plenty of options. "Given what we offer, people can pick and choose," said Bruce Haskell, food service coordinator for the Division of Housing and Food Services.

For more than 30 years, Hobie's Restaurant has been tucked away in the Trowbridge Plaza but it remains one of East Lansing's best untapped resources for sandwiches and soup on the go. Once part of a thriving franchise, Hobie's, 930 Trowbridge Road, has survived a near closing. "Parents know about this place because back in the '70s and '80s, this was the place to come to," Hobie's owner Dave Baker said.

Groups rally for new Multicultural Center

Leaders representing various student groups have plans to initiate a lobbying effort for an expanded Multicultural Center. After years of frustration with their small facility, located in the basement of the Union, members from groups such as the Council of Progressive Students and the Council of Racial Ethnic Students are looking to create a group lobbying effort by the end of the year, said ASMSU Student Assembly Chair Missy Kushlak. "We keep getting the runaround from the administration," she said.

Council collects pledges for senior class gift, 'Sparty' project

The rock on Farm Lane, scholarships and building signs probably didn't come gift-wrapped, but all are gifts to the university from past senior classes. This year, MSU's Senior Class Council has been working to raise money for the first senior class gift in nearly a decade.

Because the MSU men's basketball team finished the Big Ten season with a 12-4 record and was the third of three conference teams selected to represent the Big Ten in the NCAA Tournament, Tom Izzo will have to switch to Kroger-brand canned peaches. In certain respects, collegiate basketball is more of a business than a sport.
