'U' students to meet Nobel winners

Because of their research and studies, two MSU graduate research students are getting the chance to mingle with Nobel Prize winners in Germany. Chemical engineering graduate student Dina Eldin and physical chemistry graduate student Deborah Davies, who are both working toward their doctorate degrees, will spend five days in Lindau, Germany with 498 other International graduate students and 58 American students at the 54th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates and Students.

Sure, you were overjoyed Tuesday night when the Pistons put the Pacers away to advance to their first NBA Finals since the Bad Boys in 1990, but it was a fake joy.

WEB ONLY: 'U' professor to use grant to develop software

An associate professor in Michigan State University's Lyman Briggs School said he is hoping he can use a grant of more than $255,000 to transform a computer program about evolution into a teaching tool to show students how the process works. Robert Pennock will use funds he received from the National Science Foundation to create a new interface for the existing program to make it more visually stimulating and easier to understand.

Flower lovers can visit the Gardens Galore Tour 2004 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Johnson statue undeserved, monument should be erected for Smith

On most Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I walk past the Breslin Center on my way to class. My walk takes me past the Earvin "Magic" Johnson statue that now juts out in front of the Breslin ticket office, and I'm usually within 20 yards or so of his big bronzed likeness. I get to see Magic's visage twice a week.

Bureau urges residents to be local tourists

Lansing - In an attempt to get people who live in the Lansing area to see it as a vacation destination, local officials are offering visitors to mid-Michigan on Saturday the chance to visit Potter Park Zoo, the Michigan Historical Center and about 30 other local attractions all for a $1 ticket. "Be a Tourist In Your Own Town," an event sponsored by more than 20 area businesses and the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau, will give residents the opportunity to buy a passport for $1 access to attractions, such as; the Fenner Nature Center, Impression 5 Science Center, both in Lansing, and the Nokomis Learning Center in Okemos. The passport is good from 10 a.m.

Amateur-built aircrafts receive low safety stats

Three days after three people were killed in a home-built airplane crash, advocates of amateur-built aircraft are defending the genre's safety - claiming federal statistics portraying it as comparatively unsafe are invalid. Allen Ward, 52, from Ypsilanti, piloted the kit plane that crashed in Vermontville Township on Monday afternoon.
