Lansing Jazz Festival announces lineup; adds stage

The lineup for the 10th annual Lansing Jazz Festival on Aug. 6-7 was released Tuesday and event officials are excited about big names and more music than in years past. "We have four stages as opposed to three," said Terry Terry, president of the Old Town Business and Arts Development Association.

Granholm approves theology legislation

Overwhelming support by many Michigan students and educators paved the way for Gov. Jennifer Granholm's approval Thursday of scholarship eligibility for theology students. The governor approved a five-bill package after the state Senate unanimously voted in favor of it in May.

Former Spartan coach crashes into airport

A former Spartan assistant wrestling coach crashed his sport utility vehicle into a Florida airport terminal Sunday. Alexis Vila, a 33-year-old Cuban defector and Williamston resident, sustained no injuries and was detained by authorities after slamming through a wall, and into a ticket counter at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Before coming to MSU in 2000, Villa won a wrestling bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for Cuba.

Businesses boom with festival crowd

While some business owners say they are unlikely to see a boom in business during the Common Ground Festival, others are bracing for the expected 10,000-12,000 people in the city every night during the seven-day event, which began Monday. Manager Jennifer Schoon said increased business at the Nuthouse Sports Grill, 420 E.

Police: Arson suspected

Arson is suspected to be the cause of two trash can fires, which occurred shortly before 4 a.m. Thursday at Owen Graduate Hall, according to MSU police. There are no suspects in the fires MSU police Sgt.

Lansing - Thousands jammed the Louis F. Adado Riverfront Park on Monday and gave a hearty, beer-guzzling welcome to the sleaze-loving Texan trio, ZZ Top. Playing to a sold-out audience, ZZ Top kicked off the Common Ground Festival's first night in a weeklong schedule of concerts. By 7:30 p.m., the temporary festival gates were on their way to being packed.

Lansing - Pitching again took center stage at Oldsmobile Park Tuesday night as Lansing Lugnuts starter Ronald Bay had a stellar game to help his team to a 3-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.After Monday's 3-2 win, where pitcher Justin Jones had one of his best outings of the year, Bay followed up with one of his best performances of the season."I pitched real well tonight I thought," Bay said.

Take action

Getting involved in politics is a positive move. Sitting and complaining about the presidential candidates and election issues has never been productive, but given the months left before the elections no one has an excuse for either failing to eventually vote, or shying away from getting involved with their favorite candidate's election campaign. If you love what President Bush is doing as the country's leader, like the way he's done his job and his foreign policy on terrorism, then by all means get out there and say so - support him, do whatever it takes.

Ockerman to transfer from 'U', leave team

The MSU men's basketball team has lost another player to transfer. Walk-on sophomore Justin Ockerman has decided to transfer to another school, according to MSU assistant sports Information director Matt Larson. The 6-foot-9, 265-pound center played in 15 games for the Spartans with season totals of six points, eight rebounds and 34 minutes of playing time. Ockerman had spent three years as a pitcher in the Seattle Mariners organization before coming to MSU.

Pizzeria brings soccer fans together

Normally, Bell's Greek Pizza at 225 M.A.C. Ave. is busy in the wee hours of the morning serving up slices, as the bar crowd stumbles in to engage in late-night fervor and feast. But for the past month, the little pizzeria has been packed all afternoon as it plays host to a large and diverse gathering of international flavor.
