Peace plane

The no-fly list is not being used as effective terrorism prevention. It is instead being used as a form of discrimination. Yusuf Islam, the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens, bore witness to that Thursday when he was denied entry into the United States from aboard a United Airlines flight to Washington, D.C.

Police warn 'U' about callers

Ingham County Sheriff Gene Wriggelsworth expressed concern this week with organizations calling residences and claiming to raise money for the sheriff's department. Meanwhile, on campus, an early morning whispering caller is posing as women's friends or boyfriends, making obscene comments and attempting phone sex. In a statement Wednesday, Wriggelsworth said a recent flood of misleading calls are telemarketers claiming to support law enforcement, promising better community protection or "fixing" minor violations. Similarly, the East Lansing Police Department never does fund-raising by phone, East Lansing police Capt.

E.L. Planning Commission approves new building plan

Corey Partnership developers said they "burned the midnight oil" last week, adjusting their vision for the corner of Bailey Street and Grand River Avenue to comply with city and neighborhood requests. Their work paid off Wednesday night when the East Lansing Planning Commission, which previously voted against the development, recommended its approval, 7-2. The issue will go before city council on Oct.

Security problems keep Moore from 'U'

Efforts to bring Michael Moore to campus fell through on Thursday because ASMSU was unable to garner security for the event. MSU's undergraduate student government cited problems with the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety as the main reason they were unable to secure Moore. "Basically it wasn't given enough time," said Kristen Daddow, Student Assembly vice chairperson of student programming.

Hoosiers experience, talent leads to wins

Playing, practicing and preparing in a state known as "the crossroads of America" seems especially appropriate for Indiana this season. Boasting an improbable 2-1 record, the Hoosiers' football program is at its own crossroads.

State News staff predicts Big Ten conference final football standings

In a mediocre year for the conference, the Boilermakers' passing game, the Wolverines' defense and Minnesota's favorable schedule and running game will lead them all to share the conference crown. MSU will find itself back near the bottom without a proven leader on the field. T1. Purdue T1. Minnesota T1. Michigan 4. Ohio State 5. Wisconsin 6. Iowa T7. MSU T7. Indiana 9. Penn State 10. Northwestern 11. Illinois Jonathan Malavolti The Big Ten is up for grabs, but I am going to go out on a limb and pick Wisconsin to win the Big Ten title with defense.

Potential tailgate

In response to the proposed ideas on tailgate regulation ("Officials discuss tailgate regulation" SN 9/23), I have to say that some of the ideas presented were needed long ago to help many of the problems with the Wilson tennis courts tailgate area. I have worked football parking for the MSU Athletics Department's Ralph Young Fund for three football seasons at donor Lot G across from the tennis court area and I've seen much of what happens.

Opinions sought in tailgating revisions

Every MSU student has a chance to influence the future of tailgating. At a Wednesday meeting where student leaders and MSU officials discussed health and safety issues surrounding gameday tailgating, officials urged student organizations to collect ideas and suggestions from MSU students. The university's undergraduate student government ASMSU, the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Council and the Residence Halls Association were some of the groups present.

ASMSU hopes to change alcohol rules during game-day tailgating

Tailgating as MSU knows it might change if a bill drafted in ASMSU on Thursday is approved next week. MSU's undergraduate student government's policy committee devoted an entire meeting to tailgating policy changes that will affect all on-campus game day partying. "We wanted to nip this in the bud before it developed into something of a long-term problem," said Mike Susner, representative for the College of Natural Sciences. The committee recommended a series of changes, including a no-glass policy, a limit on the alcohol potency and a time restriction before the game. "The need has become especially pronounced recently," Susner said.

Conference race is wide open, finally

Nothing like kicking off the Big Ten season to figure out the contenders from the pretenders. Just like your favorite reality TV show, not everybody will get a rose - or an invitation to the Rose Bowl that is - at the end of this season. So who's it going to be?

"The times, they are a changing." Dylan was right on. As soon as we have to start acknowledging Indiana as a threat, it's proof the Big Ten is closer than ever. Uncle Joey will be looking to ride out last week's success, when he went 3-1.
