WEB UPDATE: Nine-game women's basketball win streak ends at Ohio State

By Chris Meagher The State News Columbus, Ohio - The MSU women's basketball team's nine-game winning streak came to a screeching halt Thursday night in Columbus when the Spartans lost to Ohio State, 68-54. After a tied first half, Ohio State (13-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) turned up both the offense and defense in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 28-7 and causing five turnovers in the last 10:50 of the game. MSU (12-2, 1-1) shot a season-low 32.8 percent from the field as a team, including only 28.6 percent in the second half.

WEB UPDATE: Men's hoops begin Big Ten season tonight

It's their last chance. They've had a glimpse at the championship hardware twice and now the top teams are tougher, creating an uphill battle to bring home a Big Ten title. Seniors Chris Hill, Alan Anderson and Kelvin Torbert came close in 2003 finishing 10-6 - tied for third and even closer in 2004 - tying for second with a 12-4 record.??? ?Now, with more depth and talent than the past three MSU teams, the senior Spartans have set their sights on the top crown. "It's off the scale," Anderson, a forward, said of his determination to win the conference.

WEB UPDATE: Women's basketball team beats U-M, Bowen scores career 1,000 points

ANN ARBOR - After the No. 10 MSU women's basketball team beat then-No. 8 Connecticut 67-51 Wednesday, there was a chance they could have a let down playing at Michigan on Sunday. Through the first half, the Spartans (12-1 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) struggled, but came out and dominated the second half, en route to a 70-60 win. "Of course we expected a great game (from Michigan)," head coach Joanne P.

Fretter's OT goal ensures title

By Eric Fish The State News Detroit - Junior forward Colton Fretter scored 9:24 into overtime to give the Spartans a 2-1 win over intrastate rival Michigan as MSU captured the Great Lakes Invitational tournament championship for the first time since 2000.

Spartans roll over UCLA, 76-64

The No. 23 Spartans' arsenal of offensive weapons was too much for a young UCLA team Tuesday. MSU (7-2) used senior guard Chris Hill's sharp-shooting and junior center Paul Davis' toughness down low to help knock off a rising UCLA team, 76-64.

Football update: Caulcrick and Fields earn postseason honors

Redshirt freshman running back Jehuu Caulcrick was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team by The Sporting News. Caulcrick progressively carried the ball more and more toward the end of MSU's 5-7 season, eventually finishing fourth on the team in rushing yards with 619.

Icers salvage weekend split with Fighting Irish

By Eric Fish The State News Ash Goldie and Tommy Goebel scored 39 seconds apart to break a 1-1 tie and lead the MSU hockey team to a 4-1 win Saturday over Notre Dame at Munn Ice Arena. Notre Dame (4-9-4 overall, 3-8-3 CCHA) struck first early in the second period on the power play when forward Josh Sciba found a rebound in front of the net and fluttered it past MSU sophomore goaltender Dominic Vicari to put the Irish up, 1-0. The goal was answered at 15:14 of the stanza when Goldie scored the first of his three goals on the night after he smacked in a rebound created by shots from sophomore defenseman A.J.

U.S. Congress approves $131M to fund abstinence education

For more than 30 years, teaching about condom use, STDs and sexual safety has been the cornerstone of the nation's sex education repertoire, but some say it's time to put more money toward focusing on abstinence. In response to more lawmakers advocating abstinence education programs in American schools, Congress recently approved funding increases to close the gap between comprehensive and abstinence programs. In 2002, The Heritage Foundation found that for every $12 provided for comprehensive sex education programs, only $1 is provided for abstinence education.
