ASMSU: More voters to turn out for election

Eight hours into ASMSU's election, 500 students - or about 1.4 percent - had logged onto the election Web site to vote, but student government leaders said that's not good enough. "It may be lower than what it was last year," Patricia Smith, Student Assembly internal vice chairperson said.

Clutten competing in NCAAs starting Friday

Junior swimmer Ian Clutten will be the lone Spartan heading to the 2005 NCAA Championships which starts noon today in Minneapolis. The Capetown, South Africa, native will compete in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. This season in the Big Ten Championships, Clutten placed third in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes as MSU came in ninth place.

Sharp cuts

The money's as good as gone. With Republican lawmakers consenting to Gov. Jennifer Granholm's plan to eliminate budget shortfall in the state on Wednesday, Michigan's public universities and community colleges stand to lose $30 million in state funding. The likely cuts, which will eliminate $5 million from MSU's general operating budget, are hard to accept.

Research shown at capitol

Undergraduate students from a number of universities across Michigan presented their research Wednesday at the Capitol for the Michigan Undergraduate Research Forum. More than 50 students from MSU, Wayne State University, University of Michigan, University of Michigan-Dearborn and University of Michigan-Flint were present at the forum. The event commenced in the Capitol rotunda with an opening speech by MSU President Lou Anna K.

Nightingale signs pro contract with Grrrowl

Senior forward Adam Nightingale signed an ECHL contract with the Greenville Grrrowl on Tuesday. He is the first Spartan from this year's senior class to make the jump to the professional level. Nightingale was a two-year assistant captain at MSU and finished his MSU career with 11 goals and 10 assists in 67 games.

Mockumentary follows beer drinkers, friends

The 2002 film "Fubar" will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday in room W499 of the Main Library, as part of the Friday Night Film Series. "Fubar," in classic mockumentary style, follows the lives of Dean (Paul Spence) and Terry (David Lawrence), two Canadian metalheads who seem to do little more than drink beer and discuss heavy metal. The film will be presented by Michael Unsworth, assistant director of the MSU Canadian Studies Centre and librarian in the Collections Management Division. Admission is free.

Jennifer Wiley said she has a special place in her heart for cows - even the mean ones. The fourth-year veterinary medicine student grew up on a dairy farm and received her first show cow, Angel, when she was 8 years old.

Flyers raise awareness about riots

With both MSU basketball teams advancing to the Sweet 16, university and city officials are focusing on raising awareness about responsible celebration through flyers and meetings. The flyers, detailing the consequences of participating in or watching a riot and publicly consuming alcohol, were put together by Olin Health Center and distributed throughout the city and on campus. "We don't want people to think the norm is that everyone gets drunk and is out of control," said Dennis Martell, Olin Health Education Services Coordinator. The flyers use information from a 2003 survey of social and academic life, conducted by MSU's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research.
