When Stanton falters, so does team

He ended the game on the sidelines, just not in the way that he was accustomed. Whenever junior quarterback Drew Stanton is out of the game, when all is said and done, it's usually a good thing — as in MSU's early-season romps against Kent State, Hawaii and Illinois. But not this time. Stanton threw three red-zone interceptions and had a fumble returned for a touchdown as MSU was mauled by Northwestern last weekend. A week later, Stanton has no other option but to have a bounce-back game to keep the Spartans in bowl contention as they face Indiana at noon Saturday at Spartan Stadium. "After watching the film, I was ready to move on," Stanton said.

Muslim population more than believed

After reading the article "Muslim convert faces lingering stereotypes" (SN 10/25) about David Stepien converting to Islam and his statement that he knew the number of Muslims in Pinckney, Mich.

Other L.A. QB makes his way up

Reggie Bush Junior running back Southern Cal Last week: Eight carries for 51 yards and one touchdown, two receptions for 18 yards, an 84-yard punt return for a touchdown Wasn't dominant but punt return is just another addition to his highlight reel. Vince Young Junior quarterback Texas Last week: Went 12-for-22 for 239 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, rushed seven times for 45 yards and one touchdown Took some time to get going but once he did, so did Texas. Matt Leinart Senior quarterback Southern Cal Last week: Went 20-for-26 for 201 yards and four touchdowns Became the Pac-10's career leader in touchdown passes against Washington.

Changes need to be made if blunders continue

Remember when the Spartans football team was 4-0? The campus was buzzing with excitement, the media was throwing around the idea of a Big Ten title, Johnny Spirit was booking his hotel in Pasadena, Calif., students were wearing "Drew Stanton for Heisman" shirts and the Spartans looked literally unstoppable. Then the Michigan game happened.

Man perpetuates rape stereotypes

Matt Cook, you ignorant twit: Rape is not an act of lust, attraction, love or desire. It is an act of violence, power and aggression ("Clothes contribute to reasons to rape" SN 10/27). Although women who dress provocatively might attract more attention than those you call "properly dressed" (who are you to decide what is proper, anyway?) and might provoke more lustful thoughts, it is the ideas that "men are stimulated by sight" and "men and women are influenced by different things" which help to propagate such stereotypes that women deserve to be raped, ask for it, or could do something to prevent their rape based solely on their choice of clothing. Most males have no idea what it is like to be a rapist and unless you do, I suggest you keep your opinions and theories on the subject to yourself. Kathryn Patterson 2004 graduate

Writer misinterprets; court case just, lawful

Although I will not quarrel with John Knowles' characterization of Harriet Miers, "Nominee Harriet Miers doesn't have much to qualify her for bench" (SN 10/26), I must take issue with the description offered in his article of the Romer v.

Break-ins plague outlying car lots

A cool September morning. An early riser drives, veers left and pulls into an empty spot in Lot 89. And then, the sound of glass shattering under the front tires.

Fan quits watching after disappointment

I have finally given up all hope for the MSU football program. After years of supporting the MSU football program, I have been forced to quit. To me, being a fan of MSU football is like being an alcoholic: You have some great times, but in the end you are left miserable, hungover and without hope.

Stanton and Co. should have no trouble rebounding vs. Hoosiers

Quarterback MSU junior quarterback Drew Stanton is coming off the worst game of his career against Northwestern and is looking to rebound. Indiana quarterback Blake Powers is coming off a bad game himself, passing for just 72 yards in the Hoosiers' 41-10 loss to Ohio State. Powers, though, has been decent this season, throwing for 20 touchdowns against eight interceptions and he has some nice targets to throw to. Despite Stanton's poor game, he is clearly the better player.

Icers play No. 2 Cornell

The MSU hockey team received its Halloween treats early this year with an undefeated October. Now MSU (2-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 CCHA) is looking for an even bigger treat when the team plays No.

Benefit walk shouldn't focus on one group

I am writing in response to the health article titled "AIDS walk focuses on Hispanic patients" (SN 10/24). I am wondering as to why a virus that doesn't discriminate against culture, race, sex or other social distinctions is being treated in a secular manner by the Lansing Area AIDS Network, or LAAN. Why was the AIDS walk not about the larger picture that focuses on all patients living with the disease?

MSU has 1 week before progsters 'mail in season'

MSU vs. Indiana Fish: To play or not to play? That's the big question for the Spartans after a terrific 4-0 start was wiped out by three straight losses MSU's offense was sub-par last weekend against a terrible Northwestern defense, as it struggled to put up 14 points.

Enough said?

Jennifer Gumas stepped up to the microphone and introduced herself to the 12 independent commission members sitting across from her. This was after she handed each member a document with the topics she was about to discuss. "A lot of students feel alienated by East Lansing," she said.
