Fans enjoy big game from E.L.

Waleed Lado wanted to understand American's obsession with football on its biggest day. Lado, who came to Michigan recently from Saudi Arabia to study microbiology at Lansing Community College and to practice Christianity, watched the Super Bowl on Sunday from Buffalo Wild Wings, 360 Albert Ave., like many other college students. Lado said he was trying to understand the obsession and the commercials. "When you say 'football,' all the Americans stand up," Lado said about the excitement fans show.

Thrifting provides low-cost decor solutions

A chandelier made of Christmas lights and beads in a Shaw Hall room shows the messy, eclectic side of Sam Montgomery. For the international relations freshman, her lights reflect how easy it can be to decorate and express personal style. Although it might seem hard at first, decorating your pad can be a fun process no matter where you live or how much it costs. After scurrying around campus looking at different rooms, I've learned that designing a cool room takes an open mind.

Party held in detroit for homeless

Detroit — Traveling north on Woodward Avenue on Sunday, past the ice sculptures, limousines, elephant ears and red and blue Super Bowl XL logos, the crowds begin to dwindle. Honks and shouts from excited ticket holders fade into the background at 138 Stimson St., where another kind of excitement is expressed. "I feel like I'm at a four-star hotel with all this service," said Ed Hansen, 24, who was at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries' activity center attending a Super Bowl party for Detroit's homeless. Unlike other parties leading up to game, the service and food were free.

Local 'experts' share successful kegger secrets

It's Friday night and you're getting ready to throw your first house party. The State News asked a group of local experts — namely, party store managers and fraternity brothers — for their advice to beer-run beginners: • Buy plenty of ice and a tub to put the keg in, otherwise you're going to end up with a wet mess or warm, skunky beer. • No sense splurging when it comes to keg beer — by the cheapest barrel you can find.

COMMENTARY

Detroit reputation is bad; dangerous place

I'm writing in response to the editorial "Rags to riches" (SN 2/3). It's incredibly misleading to say that people with a negative opinion of Detroit don't venture downtown or know very little about the city. In fact, the more familiar you are with it, the more negative your opinion tends to be.

A need to purchase books and pay rent can leave students at a loss when it comes time to enjoy some of life's extras or even some of its necessities. Thankfully, area businesses and organizations recognize that the prevalent stereotype of broke college student often rings as true as church bells on Sunday morning. To help you stay afloat, The State News has amassed a list of services and products students can obtain for no cost on and off campus.

Spartans clamp down on defense

Champaign, Ill. — Whenever the No. 17 MSU women's basketball team loses a game, the players and coaches always stress defense as the primary reason for their failures. Down the stretch of Sunday's game against Illinois, the Spartans defense couldn't have been any better. The two teams battled neck and neck for the duration of the game, with neither team holding more than an eight-point lead in the second half.
