Bigoted letters shouldn't be published in State News

How does the letter written by Daniel Piedra, "United States supports Israel with good reason," (SN 7/17), even get published? There are a lot of innocent people in danger on both sides, and The State News is allowing someone to use this conflict as a platform for their bigotry.

Last minute Casionauts fan enjoyed final performance

Note to self: Don't wait to see a band until its last show. It's like showing up at a party at 2:30 a.m., the beer drained, the happy guests and relieved hosts still wound up from the ride that you, unfortunately missed. Such was the case for me Saturday night, at Mac's Bar, 2700 E.

Veto stems research

When President Bush used his first veto on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act on Wednesday, it stifled research opportunities at one MSU lab. James Trosko, professor of pediatrics and human development, said restrictions in funding for embryonic stem cell research could limit advancements in his work with adult stem cells at the MSU cancer and stem cell lab in the Department of Pediatrics & Human Development. "It's not devastating, but it is disappointing, and it will slow down research in one of the hottest medical research areas in decades." The act would have expanded federal funding for research to go beyond supporting the stem cell lines — a group of genetically identical cells — that are already being studied. Those cell lines will probably never be used for therapy because they are either contaminated with animal viruses or have shown to be genetically abnormal, Trosko said. "You have to consider whether you are going to waste your time working on those lines when they have already shown that they aren't effective," Trosko said. Trosko and his colleague, pediatrics and human development Professor Chia-Cheng Chang, are the two researchers in the MSU cancer and stem cell lab studying adult stem cells — a field in which stem cells donated by consenting adults are used instead of embryonic stem cells for developing therapeutic treatments, Trosko said. Both embryonic and adult stem cell tissue research have the potential to bring about therapy that can provide better treatment or even cures for cancer, diabetes and other diseases, Trosko said. Embryonic stem cells have the potential to grow any type of cell a person needs, such as cells that produce insulin for people with diabetes.

More people should speak out against intolerance

I hope more people like Cynthia Kraus, who wrote the letter "Piedra's letter offensive, should not be tolerated," (SN 7/21), take the time and energy to speak out when they hear, read or see the sort of intolerance shown by Daniel Piedra in his earlier letter, "United States supports Israel with good reason," (SN 7/17). If there is one lesson I have learned in the last few years, this is it: We need to realize that any form of generalization reduces not only those described to less than whole, but also shows the thinker's, in this case writer's, lack of common sense and understanding for the issue at hand. The fact that any one person, like Piedra, feels his or her view is the only correct view should scare anyone with half a brain. Piedra, I hope that a communications junior would understand how to craft an argument to persuade people — not to alienate them.
