Michigan budget problems could affect statewide fair funding

Because of statewide budget troubles, fairground officials are concerned that maintenance of facilities and exhibitor payouts will become a more difficult task in the near future. If funding doesn't come through, there could be an effect on how the fairgrounds will be run and maintained, said Tom Edman, Ingham County Fairgrounds executive director. "We are doing fine as we speak," he said.

Miss Michigan contestants return home

The suitcases of outfits and jewelry are almost unpacked, but the memories will be tucked away forever. Three MSU students returned to their hometowns Sunday after spending a week in Muskegon competing in the Miss Michigan 2007 scholarship pageant. While they won't be unpacking the winning crown, Katie Thomas, a nutritional sciences senior; Christie Charron, a political science junior; and Melissa Cousino, a psychology senior; said the week of events and competition was all worth it. "It was really great," Thomas, 20, said.

Lansing — The three homeowners who are receiving exterior renovations from a Lansing-based makeover project are not just getting a new paint job - their homes will have custom-designed landscape architecture created by MSU students.

MSU searches for new athletics director

As the university begins its search for the next athletics director, the MSU Board of Trustees' advisory committee released a set of criteria to determine Ron Mason's successor. Mason recently announced he would retire after his contract expires in June 2008. The committee, comprised of trustees Melanie Foster, George Perles and Colleen McNamara, developed the majority of the criteria with some input from MSU President Lou Anna K.

Quit acting trashy

Espresso Royale Caffe, the friendly neighborhood coffee shop facing campus on East Grand River Avenue, just announced it will start carrying environmentally friendly plastic cups made from a biodegradable, corn-based biopolymer. This means the cups will break down like any other plant, and you can even compost them yourself. The café also will start providing paper cups made from recycled paper.

New tax renews hope for businesses

Michigan finally has a replacement for the controversial Single Business Tax, or SBT, and the change looks to be a step in the right direction. State lawmakers from both political parties worked together to craft the Michigan Business Tax, or MBT.

In "Athletic priorities," (SN 6/14), Drew Winter argued for the irrelevance of sports, also saying every fan is simply wasting their time following teams full of "steroid-laden strangers sweating their way to artificial glory." As a student, nothing feels better than watching your chemistry lab partner plant a Spartans flag at the 50-yard line in South Bend, Ind.

MIDDAY UPDATE: University searching for next athletics director

Criteria was released by an advisory committee chaired by Trustee Melanie Foster to determine Ron Mason's successor. Mason, the MSU athletics director, will retire when his contract expires in June 2008. The rest of the committee is comprised of trustees George Perles and Colleen McNamara. "He has been a phenomenal attribute to MSU athletics as both a coach and athletic director," Foster said of Mason, who has been the athletics director since 2002. There have been some outside candidates who have already expressed interest in Mason's job, as well as a strong internal candidate.
