Seeing both sides

College students in blue states have an easy time being liberal. Especially when they spend a prominent amount of free time in coffee shops discussing the horrors of corporate America, capitalism, materialism, etc. Writers like Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore and Bob Woodward become iconic figureheads for those who have it right, while conservatism quickly evolves into a two-dimensional ideal harbored by followers of a pope or pharaoh, preaching subservience and doublethink to a single unwavering ecclesiastic doctrine. But upon further thought, I realized that even myself - an environmentalist, semi-socialist, agnostic vegan - found things in common with popular conservative beliefs.

Broad Art Museum design to be chosen

Today's the day. Eight jurors will meet with five architectural firms during a span of about seven hours to accomplish one goal - pick the winning design for the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. Joseph Giovannini, the architect overseeing the competition, has provided the jurors with a list of criteria to look for to complete the space. But the jurors agree it will be more about gut instinct, and they're not taking their job lightly. "Maybe I'm not going in there looking for something," said Edwin Chan, an architect with Gehry Partners LLP and one of the jurors for the competition.

Research links DNA with colon cancer

An MSU researcher working with a team of scientists discovered people carrying a certain genetic variation are more susceptible to colon cancer. In a study that included MSU epidemiologist Joseph Bonner, researchers identified people who carry a marker on human chromosome 8 are 23 percent more likely to develop colon cancer. The findings were published in the July issue of Cancer Biology and Therapy. Through genetic testing of patients, doctors are able to look for variations linked to colon cancer and watch people who are at risk more carefully, Bonner said.

Wood, who teaches at Hillsborough County Public Schools in Tampa, Fla., was among the 100 educators who traveled to MSU's College of Engineering Monday as part of the Summer Magnet and Related Training Institute.

Quixtar, Amway models of entrepreneurialism

Chris Hansen's letter "DeVos should serve time for Quixtar scam at MSU" (SN 7/16) shows another small voice making incredible accusations at a company that has no need for such accusations. What Mr. Hansen does not understand is what the compensation plan quixtar.com and its sister company Amway offer is better than any sales compensation plan offered in the nation.

Affordable health care

Correction: The story should have said people older than 65 can receive Medicare. Molly Lobeck always knew she wanted to go into medicine, but it wasn't until she volunteered at the Care Free Medical clinic in Lansing that she knew she had found her niche. The dinner table talks from her childhood between her father and mother, who both worked in the pharmaceutical industry, sparked her interest in medicine. "I always wanted to do what my dad did, but in a different area," she said. Although she initially planned to be a pharmacist, it was her experience volunteering at the clinic that made her decide to attend medical school. "I realized I really did like the patient aspect of it, and maybe being a doctor wouldn't be such a bad thing for me," she said. Lobeck finished her first year of medical school at MSU in the spring after graduating with a degree in microbiology and molecular genetics from MSU in 2006.
