Words, music event fosters peace

An international attempt at creating worldwide peace has been brought local as part of the Words and Music event Wednesday night at the East Lansing Public Library. The event was part of Words of Peace, a worldwide movement that has organized groups of volunteers to create events in their local areas in recognition of peace.

Group looks for support, funds to repaint garage

A local group is beginning a project that could change the appearance of an iconic East Lansing structure. Members of an East Lansing law firm have started an exploratory petition to change the color of the Lot 10 Colorful Garage, on Division Street between E. Grand River Avenue and Albert Street, from the current orange and green color scheme to a more MSU-centric green and white.

MSU researchers develop possible biofuel

Recent scientific advancements of biofuels by MSU researchers could pave the way for both new fuels and low-calorie foods. Timothy Durrett, an MSU plant biology research associate, along with visiting professor of plant biology Michael Pollard and university distinguished professor of plant biology John Ohlrogge, discovered a technique of isolating a gene responsible for the synthesis of an oil in the seeds of the Euonymus alatus — or burning bush.

Heat Awareness Day helps inform locals

As students sweated out the summer heat with temperatures reaching 85 degrees Wednesday, the National Weather Service was promoting how to stay cool for Heat Awareness Day. The day was established to draw attention to how dangerous heat can be in the summer months.

Memorial holiday service to be held

State Sen. Valde Garcia, R-Howell, a U.S. Army and National Guard veteran of Operation Desert Storm, will preside over the 16th annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Michigan Senate Chamber at the Capitol Building.

Assessing e-books prepares MSU for future

Now, the university is performing an informational study that gauges how prepared students are for a potential switch to e-books and other digital courseware. It makes sense from an environmental standpoint to utilize advances in digital technology to reduce paper waste. Moneywise, it wouldn’t hurt to find an alternative to the fleecing students receive when they purchase course textbooks.

Man sentenced to 120 days for on-campus indecent exposure

An Illinois man allegedly connected to an on-campus sexual assault in February was sentenced Wednesday in 54B District Court to 120 days in jail. In addition to a prison sentence, Montague Stanford, of Naperville, Ill., received 24 months probation and must pay a total of $3,666 in court fees after pleading guilty to one count of indecent exposure April 30.

City Council approves new downtown sculpture

East Lansing’s landscape likely changed with an approval by the city council at Tuesday night’s City Council work session. At the meeting, the council authorized the placement of a new sculpture on the new plaza being constructed on the east side of the East Lansing Marriott at University Place.

Michigan awarded $10M grant to track students' education progress

Michigan was awarded a more than $10 million grant as part of the Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems Grant Program, or SLDS, which aids states in gathering data to improve schools by tracking students’ progress throughout their educational career. All 50 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, applied for the grant money, but Michigan was one of only 20 states to earn a portion of the $250 million.

A 36-year-old male MSU professor reported his digital clock missing from a windowsill Friday morning at the Engineering Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The man left his office last Wednesday and returned Friday morning to find the clock missing.
