6 Spartans headed to Track and Field Championships

On the final day of action at the NCAA East Regional in Greensboro, N.C., four members of the MSU track and field team did well enough to advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships, starting June 8 in Eugene Ore. Among the many Spartans to record personal or season-best marks was senior triple jumper Kryon Foster, who jumped a season-best 15.79 meters. His leap was good enough for sixth place and a spot in the championships.

Rowing team advances three boats to Saturday semifinals

In the first day of competition at the 2010 NCAA Championship regatta Friday in Sacramento, Calif., the MSU rowing team advanced all three of its boats to the semifinals, which start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. The Spartans’ varsity eight easily made it to Saturday’s semifinal, when it finished behind California and USC but beat Washington and Washington State.

Prisoners discuss jail life with kids, families at Lansing event

An interactive discussion between prisoners and Lansing-area residents took place at Lansing Community College, or LCC, on Thursday, highlighting the importance of education and personal responsibility. Area families and their children attended the Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration event Thursday at LCC’s Dart Auditorium.

Sophomore breaks MSU high jump record, headed to nationals

The MSU track and field team began action in the NCAA Track and Field East Regional on Thursday in Greensboro, N.C., and already has a first-place finish to bring home. Sophomore Becca Buchholtz highlighted day one of the competition when she tied for first in the high jump and broke the school record with a leap of 1.81 meters.

Potential gas tax hike could help state, anger students

Doubling the state gas tax and vehicle registration fees ultimately might cost Michigan citizens less, according to a May 13 study by the East Lansing-based research organization Anderson Economic Group. Road congestion currently costs each person about $287 each year in wasted gas and time, and in the near future, poor road conditions could cost the state some 12,000 jobs.

MSU study reduces pneumonia patient hospital stay time

A recent study performed by MSU researchers and several other groups in five states could reduce hospital stays of pneumonia patients. The College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine was one of seven groups in the Multicenter Osteopathic Pneumonia Study in the Eldery.

Police Brief 05/28/10

Two male MSU students, aged 20 and 21, reported their Nike shoes missing Sunday from a Breslin Center locker room, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The students left their shoes in unlocked lockers for the weekend last Thursday.

'Odyssey' world finals begin

The Odyssey of the Mind 2010 World Finals has brought thousands of students from across the globe to MSU. The program presents teams with problems, which must be solved creatively. Organizers and participants said Odyssey of the Mind helps build critical thinking skills, creativity and, perhaps most importantly, forges lasting bonds.

Olin won’t move to Clinical Center

Plans to relocate Olin Health Center to the Clinical Center have been dropped by university officials. The plans were being explored during the 2009-10 academic year because of university-wide budget reductions. Instead, officials are exploring offering Olin services in MSU’s residential neighborhoods, and have not ruled out a possible new building for the center in the future.

House deliberates higher ed funding

The state House Appropriations Committee voted Tuesday to keep funding for Michigan’s public universities at its current amount for the next fiscal year, and a full House vote on the issue is expected as soon as Thursday.

Police Brief 05/27/10

An 18-year-old female MSU student reported her cell phone missing Saturday in Snyder Hall, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The student left her dorm room to take out the trash, leaving the door halfway open, McGlothian-Taylor said. Upon returning, she discovered her phone missing from her desk.

Volunteers provide for veterans

Homeless veterans used free services at the seventh annual Capital Area Stand Down for Homeless Veterans hosted by the Volunteers of America. The event offered free food, checkups with nurses, vision tests, hair cuts, assistance with employment and legal help to soldiers without a home after their service was completed.

Students abroad in China find Internet less accessible

Facebook and Twitter are included on the banned list of websites in the country, which also includes YouTube and most Google applications, due to their content. Although it might not be a problem for many people in the U.S., MSU students on study abroad must get accustomed to the adjustment.

Lake Lansing park services free Monday

Ingham County Parks Department will offer Lake Lansing Park, 1621 Pike St., in Haslett, activities free of charge on Memorial Day. Visitors will be granted access to the park for free and will be open until sunset.

Words, music event fosters peace

An international attempt at creating worldwide peace has been brought local as part of the Words and Music event Wednesday night at the East Lansing Public Library. The event was part of Words of Peace, a worldwide movement that has organized groups of volunteers to create events in their local areas in recognition of peace.

Group looks for support, funds to repaint garage

A local group is beginning a project that could change the appearance of an iconic East Lansing structure. Members of an East Lansing law firm have started an exploratory petition to change the color of the Lot 10 Colorful Garage, on Division Street between E. Grand River Avenue and Albert Street, from the current orange and green color scheme to a more MSU-centric green and white.

MSU researchers develop possible biofuel

Recent scientific advancements of biofuels by MSU researchers could pave the way for both new fuels and low-calorie foods. Timothy Durrett, an MSU plant biology research associate, along with visiting professor of plant biology Michael Pollard and university distinguished professor of plant biology John Ohlrogge, discovered a technique of isolating a gene responsible for the synthesis of an oil in the seeds of the Euonymus alatus — or burning bush.

Heat Awareness Day helps inform locals

As students sweated out the summer heat with temperatures reaching 85 degrees Wednesday, the National Weather Service was promoting how to stay cool for Heat Awareness Day. The day was established to draw attention to how dangerous heat can be in the summer months.
