Creatures crawl into poor classic rock abyss

Beautiful CreaturesBeautiful Creatures (Warner Bros.) If you think just because Beautiful Creatures recently released it’s self-titled debut album and is touring with this years Ozzfest that it’s another alternative rock band with nothing to say, than you are mistaken. Actually, Beautiful Creatures is much more like an ’80s hair band with nothing to say. The quintet, lead by vocalist Joe LeSte, produced an album that’s so full of ’80s rock nostalgia such as sappy lyrics and screaming guitar solos that you can practically smell hairspray on the CD.

R-rated trailer removed from Internet site

Culver City, Calif. - Sony Pictures Entertainment has pulled an R-rated trailer for the upcoming comedy “Not Another Teen Movie” from an Internet site. The Motion Picture Association of America, which rates films and advertisements, complained to the studio last week that R-rated trailers should not be shown on the Internet, where underage children can view them. MPAA President Jack Valenti said the ad, which featured profanity and partial nudity, was withdrawn immediately by Sony from the Redbandtrailer.com preview site. The site could not be accessed at all last Friday. The trailer was only approved for theaters showing R-rated movies, Valenti added. Sony officials told the Los Angeles Times the company wasn’t aware of the MPAA regulations.

Department aims to attract younger crowds with schedule

The MSU Department of Theatre certainly wasn’t aiming for the mundane when it scheduled this year’s performance season. Those who are used to “Guys and Dolls,” may feel a little uncomfortable sitting in the audience of shows like “SubUrbia” or “Been Taken.”If all goes well, these plays will provoke emotions and thoughts aside the from run-of-the-mill entertainment found in traditional productions.“SubUrbia” will kick the season off on Sept.

Ghost of Mars another cheesy horror flick

Finally, a movie for those people who can’t wait until the weekend so they can watch all the late-night, awful horror movies with titles like “Bikini Camp III: The Reckoning.” Unless you are a fan of really bad horror movies, stay as far away as possible from writer/director John Carpenter’s latest, “Ghosts of Mars.” This movie stinks so bad, you’ll think the only other person in the theater filled their pants - and not from being frightened. This movie is so degrading to watch, as an audience member you almost want to track down Carpenter and slap him back into the 1980s, the home of bad horror flicks. It’s not that it’s full of bad actors - to the contrary, there are a number of people in this bomb whose friends should consider an intervention. First is Ice Cube, who has more than proven his acting abilities in movies like “Three Kings.” He plays James Williams, who was convicted of murder.

Mariah Carey deserves much needed break

Being a superstar in today’s society is tough. Look at any tabloid and you’ll see some pathetic-looking star with dark circles under her eyes and her belly hanging out of pants a couple sizes too small. Singer Mariah Carey knows that scenario all too well these days. Life can be stressful, and Carey is certainly feeling the heat recently after working on two different movie sets for “Glitter” and “Wise Girls,” as well as completing a soundtrack for “Glitter.” The effects of these projects caused her to recently check into a hospital \'because of mental and physical exhaustion. The consequence caused Carey’s release dates for the soundtrack and movie of “Glitter” to be set back to September 11 and 21, respectively, so she could re-energize. What’s more entertaining than seeing stars at their worst?

Rat Race has weak plot, too predictable

Looking at the cast of the new film “Rat Race,” most would expect a great movie. After all, there are three Oscar winners (Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Bates and Cuba Gooding Jr.) and several amazing comic talents including John Cleese of Monty Python, Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame and Jon Lovitz of Saturday Night Live, among others. Yet it manages to come off as nothing more than a mediocre movie. It has it’s funny moments, but if you’ve seen the previews then you’ve seen the bulk of them already, and you’ll spend the movie waiting for those funny bits.
