WEB ONLY: Interpol plays to sold out Saint Andrews Hall

Detroit - Saturday night's cold January weather was an idealbackdrop to the dissonant sputtering automaton sound of the New York newwave group, Interpol. Ironically, the audience inside Saint Andrews Hall resembled the gray,New York-styled mannequin haircut, suit and tie, peacoat fashionexpletives that Interpol members wear on stage.

Furs fans ought to try 'Trysome'

The Psychedelic Furs made some amazing albums back in the day. As the end of the 80s neared, however, so did the eventual 1991 break-up of the Furs - leaving lead singer Richard Butler off the airwaves. His return found him commanding the microphone for Love Spit Love's 1994 self-titled release. The group's second effort, "Trysome Eatone" proves Butler's voice is not only as strong as it was in the 80s but also more hypnotic. The 12-track album is a masterpiece of full-bodied guitar sounds, Butler's solid lyrics, an interesting use of synthesizer and an upbeat tempo that reveals an evolved sound with obvious Furs roots. "Trysome Eatone" flows nearly perfectly from beginning to end, with every song correctly placed and no ugly duckling bobbing between tracks. Although Butler's lyrical style includes repetition, it doesn't become repulsive.

Theater students play to regional competition crowd

Being a college thespian is no easy task. It takes brains to remember those countless lines, endurance to make it through long rehearsals and guts to perform in front of large audiences - all that and few rewards for the endless hours of work. But that hard work is paying off for five students from MSU's Department of Theatre.

Eminem, Norah Jones top this year's list of nominees

I'd like to thank the academy - no seriously, thanks a lot. Thanks for another year of firework stage shows, Britney and Justin after-party gossip and a post and pre-show red carpet walk with that hot babe, Kurt Loder. Thanks for recognizing those "artists" who bring in millions for their record companies, then disappear from the planet three years later. But before I throw popcorn at the television and complain about who won and who should have won, we've gotta look at the nominees and make the best of it. What would the Grammies be without him?

'Lifted' leaves listeners feeling everything but

Bright Eyes' "Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" is a hard album to categorize; if I had to, I'd file it under 'Emo for losers.' If you can get past the first whiny, lyrically challenged track, "The Big Picture," you might be a fan - but don't go publicly admitting that. After nearly two minutes of background noise, Conor Oberst cries about "trying to find your way out of that maze of memories," whatever that means.
