'Gemini' kicks off summer of comedy plays

With an utterly dysfunctional family raising an Ivy League child struggling to express openly his emotions, it’s no surprise that with enough tension and pressure, food goes flying at the dinner table. Kicking off its 51st season, Summer Circle Theatre opened with Albert Innaurato’s play, “Gemini,” set in Philadelphia in the early 1970s.

Pancake breakfast raises money for E.L. Park

As the play structure at Patriarche Park begins to show its age, the East Lansing Rotary Club has set the wheels in motion to restore it by raising money as part of its annual Pancakes in the Park event on Sunday at Patriarche Park, 1100 Alton Road.

After being on a national tour since January 2010, Michigan native Laura Cable will close out the end of the tour and take the stage Friday and Saturday at Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall, performing the musical “Cats.”

Summer Circle Theatre kicks off new season

Performing on the banks of the Red Cedar River, Summer Circle Theatre returns to MSU’s campus for the 51st season of production. With the stage behind the Auditorium on the lawn near the river, the summer season kicks off with Albert Innaurato’s “Gemini” — one of Broadway’s most successful comedies, running for almost four years in the 1980s.

E.L. summer concerts set to begin

June 10 marks the start of the Summer Concert Series — free music events on Friday and Saturday nights in downtown East Lansing. The concerts will be held at Fountain Square, on the corner of M.A.C. Avenue and Albert Avenue in front of the Marriott at University Place and will run until August 6.

MSU student earns recognition for work in E.L. community

Residential College in the Arts and Humanities senior Anna Orsini understands the value of community work. Thanks to that understanding and for her efforts in the East Lansing area, with the help of the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or RCAH, Orsini recently was named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact — an organization focused on education and community building.

For students like Graham Lundeen who live in East Lansing during the summer, the lack of students in town might imply a lack of entertainment options. But for Lundeen, who is planning on purchasing tickets to see “CHICAGO” again when it visits Wharton Center in May, summer in East Lansing is not a dull time for entertainment.

Grant-funded RCAH class places focus on helping local education

Erika Vivyan spent this past spring semester in what she described as a challenging classroom of high school freshmen — something most students her age don’t get the chance to experience. Vivyan, a Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or RCAH, sophomore who aspires to work in education, took one of the four classes in the Pay It Forward program within the college, which centers around giving back to the Lansing area.

Spartan lands dream job at Angel Stadium

When Brad Johnson moved to California for an internship last summer at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, he knew it was an opportunity he had been looking for. Then Johnson, a hospitality business senior, got a phone call from the food and services corporation in November 2010 indicating that the same company, Aramark, wanted him back and hired him as a manager in training in its Pathway to Leadership program, which begins in May at Angel Stadium.

The University Activities Board, or UAB, and the Senior Class Council will sponsor Lugnuts Night for graduating seniors as a part of Senior Week at 7:05 p.m. Thursday at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing.

Firearms club finds success at nationals

For Angelina Taylor, being part of the MSU Rifle and Pistol Club is a step in the direction of fulfilling a major life goal. Taylor, a physics senior and member of the club, aspires to shoot competitively in the Olympics, and the club has given her the opportunity to refine her skills to make a run at the games.
