Local rockers to perform in Ann Arbor this weekend

If you are one of the many Domestic Problems fans who missed its most recent show in East Lansing, you may have to take a road trip to catch the band this fall.The Grand Rapids sextet played at Rick’s American Cafe, 224 Abbott Road, in late August, before many students returned for the fall semester and doesn’t have any other shows in East Lansing planned for the coming months.But that doesn’t mean it won’t be nearby.

Student film crew to hold auditions for movie today

For anyone who has stayed up late watching the likes of “Halloween,” “Evil Dead” or “Friday the 13th,” this weekend you may just get your chance to be in a horror movie yourself.A film crew is holding open auditions this weekend to fill the cast of their new flick “Terror at Baxter U.,” and it will be made entirely by local filmmakers and shot in the area.“I just had an idea,” said English Professor Bill Vincent, who wrote the script.

Cinemas to release moves on time

Despite recent closings of airports across the nation, local theaters (who have movies flown to them) plan on new releases being aired as scheduled this weekend.“Hardball” and “The Glass House” will both open Friday as planned.“None of the movies are going to be delayed,” said Chris Couling, assistant manager of Celebration Cinema, 200 E.

Orchestra celebrates anniversary

By MARINA IONESCU The State News The MSU Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 75th Anniversary season this year with a performance Saturday in the Wharton Center’s Great Hall, featuring a solo performance by Dmitri Berlinsky, violinist and a new faculty member at MSU. “To commemorate the 75 years of the existence of the symphony I have asked composers to write celebration fanfares,” Leon Gregorian, conductor of the Symphony Orchestra, said. “For this first concert we will open with James Niblock’s Fanfare,” Gregorian said.

Events canceled, postponed

Before you head out to a special event this weekend, you might want to check that it hasn’t been canceled or postponed in light of recent events in New York City and Washington. Some activities have been canceled as a sign of respect for those dead and missing on the east coast, while others are facing technical problems because of lack of air transportation. Bridgette Redman, spokeswoman for Bath Community Theatre Guild, said this weekend’s production of “Goodnight Desdemona” will be postponed one week.

DVD blows away theater version of film, features in-depth interview

If you’ve already seen the cocaine-fest “Blow,” which came out in theaters earlier this year, then you know what it is - a high-energy movie featuring a sympathetic, but occasionally foolish, lead character who was responsible for almost 75 percent of the cocaine in the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But now the movie is available for everyone to rent (or own - cue commercial) on DVD, having been released this week on the format.

Sophomore release anything but chaotic

Ozomatli Embrace the Chaos (Interscope) Don’t let the title scare you, Ozomatli’s sophomore release, “Embrace The Chaos,” is anything but chaotic. It has been three years since the Los Angeles band released its self-titled debut, but the new album is worth the wait. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Spanish, so I don’t understand half of the lyrics on the album, but that doesn’t make a difference.
