Do students a solid and change retake policy

MSU students paying thousands for an education should be able to call an occasional “mulligan” for less-than-spectacular grades. University administrators should move forward with changing MSU’s current retake policy to allow for students to repeat classes regardless of first-try grades.

Bank overdraft fees deserving of more scrutiny

A new package of laws to regulate overdraft regulations in state-chartered banks will help keep Michigan-based banks from exploiting their members. If passed, banks no longer will be able to fleece their members’ accounts and roll in the profits.

The sunnier side of post-graduation internships

After working hard for years to receive a bachelor’s degree, graduates could be disappointed to find themselves without a budding professional career. But with a poor job market, internships are becoming a viable option when full-time jobs are scarce.

Good job MSU: Thanks for canceling classes

Whether it was spent sleeping, sledding or sloshed, it’s safe to say the MSU community can agree on one thing: Wednesday’s snow day was spectacular. Even though the final accumulation of 11 inches was not quite as impressive as predicted, the mere threat of an impending “Snowpocalypse” was enough for MSU to cancel classes — a good decision by university administrators.

COMMENTARY

Not much substance to part-time legislature plan

A current proposal to make the Michigan Legislature part-time simply is not the correct solution to balance the state’s budget. Michigan’s legislative branch does not account for a significant amount of the state budget and therefore should not be high on the list of funding to consider.

Students, government must solve debt problem

The whole process of paying for college is confusing enough without the burden of overwhelming student loans. The government’s higher education funding — or lack thereof — has left students shouldering the brunt of college costs, much of it in the form of student loans (read: debt).

COMMENTARY

MSU should move forward on gender-neutral housing

Proposed gender-neutral housing at MSU would be a positive step toward a more inclusive and diverse campus. The Residence Halls Association, or RHA’s, move to make Gender Neutral MSU a sponsored group is the first of many important steps in becoming a gender-neutral campus.

Child care worthy cause for COGS endowment

Graduate students often face obstacles, including financing child care, which can prevent them from finishing or even starting graduate school. A new child care fund recently started by the Council of Graduate Students, or COGS, is a good start to helping alleviate financial stress for graduate students with children.

Snyder’s speech must offer specifics and truth

Gov. Rick Snyder’s State of the State should mark the “getting down to business” phase of his term. The speech, planned for 7 p.m. tonight, is Snyder’s first real chance to lay out specific plans for this year and the rest of his time as governor.

Justifications for new SUPER!Center unclear

It seems like bad form to start the year with a plan to merge the Lansing and East Lansing Secretary of State offices — likely inconveniencing everyone — while also offering unclear figures about how much money will be saved.

Transparency essential for Michigan’s recovery

It’s a new year, new semester and a fresh face is now the head honcho in Michigan. Newly elected Gov. Rick Snyder is hoping to revive Michigan’s downtrodden economy with job creation, more bipartisan politics and a balanced two-year budget without increasing taxes.
