COMMENTARY

Shifty moves

Lame-duck Gov. John Engler should quit trying to play the godfather by making Michigan judges offers they can’t refuse during his final months in office. The chief executive hoped to move an early retirement plan for judges through the Legislature before lawmakers broke for a two-week vacation this week.

COMMENTARY

Slam dunk

R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie asked for it during this season’s kickoff celebration, and while it may have taken a while for her to get it, it’s better late than never.

COMMENTARY

Fair move

If one state lawmaker has his way, MSU could be asked to step right up to become the future host of the Michigan State Fair.

COMMENTARY

Baby steps

ASMSU deserves kudos for taking a step in the right direction toward fixing its financial mishaps, but there’s still much more work to be done in light of budget problems of recent years. The undergraduate student government approved a 22-page set of financial bylaws last week, updating the three-page document adopted in 1992.

COMMENTARY

Good example

MSU needs to follow the University of Michigan’s lead with its graduate contract settlement. Without holding an all-out strike, U-M administrators and the Graduate Employees Organization were able to come to an agreement.

COMMENTARY

Go vote

Voter turnout across this campus is getting more pathetic each time students are asked to go to the polls.

COMMENTARY

Taxed out

MSU’s undergraduate student government has a lot of questions to answer if it hopes to restore credibility to the organization and any of its referendum items to be voted on during this week’s universitywide elections. It seems ASMSU leaders will make an effort to do that at 7 p.m.

COMMENTARY

Inflated grades

Grades should reflect the amount of work students accomplish in their classes, as well as the level of intellectual ability students have.

COMMENTARY

Poor leaders

The mismanagement of student tax dollars has become a common trend for the Residence Halls Association.

COMMENTARY

Setting the record straight...

The State News editorial “Election errors” (SN 3/14) erroneously reported the number of James Madison College students and members of the college’s Student Senate on ASMSU’s All University Election Commission.

COMMENTARY

Work not done

While there have been improvements at MSU concerning awareness of the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community, there’s still a long way to go before true acceptance on campus can be achieved. In 1992, the University-Wide Task Force on Lesbian and Gay Issues and MSU published “Moving Forward,” a report that assessed the climate toward the LBGT community and identified ways to improve that quality of life.

COMMENTARY

Election errors

ASMSU might as well move its offices to Florida as the undergraduate student government is at the center of the biggest election debacle since the 2000 presidential contest. Student Life officials Wednesday decided to cancel all universitywide elections concerning ASMSU after the organization made the request due to online voting glitches and a lack of communication.

COMMENTARY

Making strides

The United States took a huge leap toward working for a peaceful solution between Palestinians and Israelis by endorsing the idea of a Palestinian sovereign nation.

COMMENTARY

Worth it

Raising $15,000 in 30 days is a lofty goal for organizers of annual Michigan Pride events, but it can be done.

COMMENTARY

Spilled milk

Instead of complaining about his team’s spot in the NCAA Tournament, MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo should be a positive force for the Spartans as they head back to Bracketville this year. Izzo was right to predict he would “get ripped for crying over spilled milk” by complaining about the team’s No.

COMMENTARY

Not the answer

Although the University of Michigan’s graduate student union held a one-day walkout Monday, MSU’s Graduate Employees Union should not follow suit.

COMMENTARY

SN endorses

If university apartment residents want to better their living conditions, the University Apartments’ Council of Residents is their best avenue.

COMMENTARY

SN endorses

ASMSU is asking for more money out of students’ pockets, but the organization isn’t providing enough information to sell its plan to the undergraduate population. The organization wants student taxpayers to spend an extra $3 per semester on its services, upping its semesterly per student revenue from $13 to $16.

COMMENTARY

Short-sighted

While it’s somewhat understandable that MSU’s Academic Council cut the university’s visual impairment education program on Tuesday, its reasoning was not well explained.
