COMMENTARY

Fix it

It has become apparent that the Residence Halls Association has some serious restructuring to do, and it may take authoritative oversight to accomplish that.

COMMENTARY

Its not free

Since the membership of Pi Kappa Phi has come under fire for poking fun at the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, some have tried to justify the fraternity’s actions as protected by the First Amendment. But the bottom line is that the constitutional right to free speech does not apply to this case. When some fraternity members went into the Mason and Abbot halls cafeterias on April 1 and April 2 wearing pink T-shirts with phrases such as “I like little boys,” “Capt.

Work loaded

Too often we read reports from various studies that attempt to spoon-feed us findings consisting of data and facts we all ready know - a recent report by the State Public Interest Research Group’s Higher Education Project is no exception. The report found many college students are working 25 hours or more per week.

COMMENTARY

Irresponsible

The continuing show of irresponsibility on the part of the Residence Halls Association forces the organization’s legitimacy to be called into question.

COMMENTARY

Fair ruling

Although it is hard to stomach the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a provision of a 1996 child pornography law on the grounds they were overly broad and in violation of First Amendment protections, the interpreters of the Constitution reached a just conclusion. The court ruled Tuesday that the statute could call into question legitimate, educational, scientific and artistic depictions of youthful sex.

COMMENTARY

Good relations

Cultural awareness and diversity are key to improving relations between students and police officers.

COMMENTARY

Wanted: variety

While it is important for higher education institutions such as MSU to offer the most possible number of courses geared to the study of different cultures, it is of greater consequence it offers a more diverse curriculum within general studies courses.

COMMENTARY

Peaceless

If the crowds gathered outside the state Capitol on Friday really intended to promote peace in the Middle East, they would have chanted in unity instead of forming two polar groups positioned on opposite sides of the sidewalk.

COMMENTARY

About time

Although it’s been almost four months since a sexual abuse scandal in the American Catholic Church began sweeping across the nation, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church finally has summoned American cardinals to the Vatican to discuss the issue. Pope John Paul II’s invitation is better late than never.

COMMENTARY

Weed out

The national headquarters of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity should heed Friday’s request of its MSU branch to review the chapter’s membership.

COMMENTARY

Role model

For the day-to-day newspaper readers who don’t give much thought to the people who work behind the pages, the life of Robert G.

COMMENTARY

Good faith

It’s always good to reach an agreement without having to resort to extreme measures - especially those that would leave both parties dissatisfied.

COMMENTARY

Diverse faculty

Though Spartans usually have a lot to be proud of, MSU’s low percentage of tenured minority faculty is not one part of that group.

COMMENTARY

Insensitive

It’s sad that during the same week MSU greeks across campus are celebrating the good deeds they do for the Spartan community, the disgraceful actions of one fraternity have given the entire greek system a black eye. Several members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity wore pink, sleeveless T-shirts that had phrases such as “I like little boys,” “Capt.

COMMENTARY

Safer drinking

It’s too early to tell if sending the message to drink responsibly has been working enough to lower alcohol-related accidents, but it’s also too soon to give up trying to promote it. A study released Tuesday by the Task Force on College Drinking, showed 1,400 college students are killed each year in alcohol-related accidents.

COMMENTARY

Good move

COMMENTARY

Fair rates

Students living in residence halls next year may have to pay a little more for free Ethernet connections, community bathrooms and daily meals courtesy of the cafeteria, but they shouldn’t complain much.On Friday, the MSU Board of Trustees is expected to raise the cost of living in the residence halls for the 11th straight year.

COMMENTARY

Rich ropes

It’s a nice thought for the ASMSU Student Assembly to approve pay for a ropes challenge course on campus.

COMMENTARY

Rail ways

Kudos to MSU leaders for moving forward with plans to construct two rail underpasses on Farm Lane. It is a project that is long overdue and will help make foot, bicycle and automobile traffic in the area more safe and swift. Although construction is not expected to begin until at least 2005, the two underpasses would be erected between Mount Hope and Trowbridge roads and could cost as much as $25 million. MSU President M.

COMMENTARY

Rad ad

Instead of criticizing MSU and Anheuser-Busch Inc. for joining forces for commercial time slots during the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, the American Medical Association should be commending the two organizations for sending a positive message. Sparty, along with seven other well-recognized college mascots, appeared in a 30-second commercial sponsored by Anheuser-Busch and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges to promote responsible alcohol consumption. The commercial begins by focusing on a basketball coach who is giving his off-camera squad a pep talk. “The way you celebrate says a lot about you,” he says.
